M46 interchangeability 200

Quick question: are all M46's the same? The tranny in my "84 245 is whining like mad in all but 4th gear. A local dismantler's got one w/ pretty low miles for two hundred bucks. the numbers on it are "volvo 1 O23534 KS". I haven't been able to get a good read on the numbers on mine, although I suppose I could do a pencil rubbing if necessary. If they're all interchangeable, however, I'd love to just buy the thing and get it over with.

Also, any clutch wisdom is welcome as well.

Thanks

Checked the numbers; they match except that my current unit's 3 ends with "K" whereas the potential replacement ends with "KS". What does this mean?

81 and later is a direct swap. ratios change because of rear diffs, sedan/sw, etc. but 86 and later have electronic speedos, some more parts have to be swapped from yours to the new trans. the 94-95 alum. case m46 weighs less, if your willing to swap the speedo stuff.

76-80 have have a different shifter bracket and a 10 spline input shaft. swap EVERYTHING and it will go, also.

no diesels, no v6s-b21/b23/b230 only. good luck, chuck.

Additional differences are -- if the trans came from a 740 -- the shifter bracket is longer and the clutch fork would be different -- and if from a late model 740 may have the output "donut" drive. -- Dave

i was talking about the 240s but forgot when i mentioned the alum case m46 is 940 only. i also forgot about the flex disc on the 85-up cars-240 included. but those are easy to change just the output flange. memory fades when you haven't been under all of them for a while. thanks, chuck.

The aluminum case M46 was introduced in about the 1986 model year in the 740 series.

No.

There are several different versions of the M46.

Early M46 through 1978 use a different clutch disc. You can just change the clutch disc or clutch kit to make it work.

And later M46 don't have a speedometer drive for a cable driven speedometer. I don't know off hand the years, but it is an easily identifiable difference.

For every day driving I suggest a Fichel & Sachs clutch kit which is the original manufacturer for Volvo.
