paint for my 544 444-544

hi everyone,
we're getting ready to paint our 65 544. wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to find the exact color of paint that we need to match up with the original color. my paint color code is 89.
we've given this number to a few paint suppliers but haven't had any luck finding it.
thanks

Any good auto paint supplier should be able to computer match your color, the same way Lowes & Home Depot can mix paint to match anything you can bring into the store. I've actually done this by removing the gas-filler door on a truck I previously owned. On a 544 you could probably take off the glove-box door, or radio delete plate if you don't have a radio.

Frankly, ANY paint shop worth its salt should be able to look up the code. It will be in ALL of the paint manufacturer's databases. Volvo #89 Light Blue/Horizon Blue.
Example DuPont Ljusbla DuPont #110287
Ault & Wiborg Light Blue A&W #32708 or 34625 (Light Shade)

I have a 2 door Amazon in that colour.

Those codes were taken from the paint makers books (year 1989 for both), for Volvo paint code #89 - Light Blue.

In the UK, my local Halfords, your NAPA or Pep-Boys, can make up an aerosol or a pot of touch up from a mix on their computer. The percentages of the colours and base are measured out by hand so you have to have faith in their ability, which as they tend to be youngsters on a McDonalds type of pay rate, is a bit like tossing a coin. Your paint supplier should get it spot on every time. Note, if your car is #89 now it will be best to paint the whole car as it tends to show a range of shades from grey to blue depending on the lighting. A bright but sunless day will show up shades on the car if it has had any parts, wings, trunk, hood etc., separately painted. I don't know what colour primer Volvo used but the final colour will be affected by its colour. i.e. white primer will give a lighter final colour than one of the darker shades. Light grey might be good.

Does the paint you get these days use clear coat or is it like

the older paints ?

The trend these days is base coat/clear coat, I think all new cars are painted this way, probably to comply with EPA guidelines. Most of it is water based. Some states like Ca. won't allow anything else, or so I'm told. Fortunately here in Tx. we can still buy the good stuff. Personally I don't like the base coat/clear coat method. I don't think it holds up as well over time, so I use single stage acrylic, applied with a HVLP turbine type sprayer. Very little overspray, so you use less paint, which save money.
