240 shiftlock?? 200 1991

91 240 automatic - can't depress button on shifter and move out of P.

I have verified that fuses 7 and 12 are good. With the key on (or with engine running) I can hear and feel the shiftlock solenoid click, but the mechanism does not unlock. The yellow override lever doesn't release the mechanism either.

Trying to understand how the system works - I can see that there is a black plastic piece on the left(driver) side of the shifter mechanism that seems to be what is blocking the button from being able to be depressed - seems like this same piece would also prevent the shifter from moving back into the various gear positions, but in the limited space I cant see how the solenoid would "release" this piece. I can't see what the override lever strikes to manually release it either.

I suspect that while the solenoid is clicking, it isn't really operating fully and unlocking the mechanism -

If I pry the solenoid loose would that release the mechanism?

"If I pry the solenoid loose would that release the mechanism?"

If you do and it does my bet is you'll make a lot of 240 owners happy when you share the trick.

Appreciate the diagrams and pics in the linked thread Art!

Never heard of lubing the solenoid - suspecting that mine is mechanically locked up even though I can hear/feel it click when I press the brake pedal I wonder if I could get it loosened and lubed???

Still trying to understand just how the mechanism works - is the open slot on the end of the piece numbered 10b in the diagram what ages the solenoid? Does 10b then slide/move along with the shift lever as it is moved through the gears?

        I think you are right.

Honestly, I did understand this thing for a brief moment or two when I had all the pieces in my hands. It has been a year since. My thoughts, at the time, were about the rapid engineering done to meet the US requirement on a car in world market, and that this design was only used two years, replaced again in '93. Still, I did not come up with a way to disable the "safety" it provides.

Thanks again Art - and the pic of the real parts taken apart is a big help!

I was able to get my fingers down underneath the solenoid and suddenly the mechanism all released for me- not sure what I did I was just trying to feel around and all of a sudden it all freed up. I'm going to lube it up with graphite real good and use it as is for a while!

Now that it's moving I can see that the part labeled 10b is hinged to the main shifter "frame" at the top and has a hook on the top end and a 90 degree bend with a slot at the other. The hook end is what interacts with the shifter lever and button, and the end with the 90 degree bend and slot is what interacts with the solenoid.

For some reason, now when I return my lever to the Park position the button is remaining depressed and part 10b is also staying in the lowered position. I'm fine with that as it keeps me from being locked out of gear like it was before, but it does also mean that the shift lever is not locked into Park and could I guess get jarred into gear unintentionally when parked.

I'm not sure what is supposed to raise part 10b and the button mechanism back up when it goes into Park - the only spring I find is the one under the button and that seems fine but is not raising the mechanism on mine.

In any case, I am supposing that cutting the right angle and the slot off the end of part 10b would take the solenoid out of the works but still keep the rest of the shifter functioning properly. guess I'll look for a shifter my next trip to the JY to experiment on.

          Jim
