odometer won't work consistently after changing gear- 1992 240 200 1992

changed the little plastic gear in my odometer two weeks ago. Previous one had a broken tooth so odometer had stopped working.
Now it works intermittently; it will start working, then stop, then start then stop, etc. Opened it up and looked for the broken tooth. Read that it can get lodged in there and cause it to jam. Looked high and low, blew it out, could not find broken tooth; so I don't think that's the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks. Daikhster.

Check the solder joints on the little motor that turns the gear. Over time they can develop tiny cracks that cause intermittent connections. This may be the issue you observe.

Also, check out Art's page relating to speedometer repair. It has useful tips on how to diagnose and repair. I just did mine and I bench tested it prior to reinstalling. If you're handy with electronics, you can use a 555 timer to generate pulses to simulate the operation at speed.

I disagree with the often-given advice to "blow it out" because in the environment most folks have their air hose, metal filings could easily be added to the magnet in the speed meter. If you couldn't find the broken gear teeth, now you are not even sure they are removed.

Am I reading your top pic correctly: one of the teeth in the base is broken? Don't believe I've ever seen that.

This month I've had 2 intermittent failure odometers. One restarted with a thump on the dash. Both had cracked solder joints.

I do blow mine out but your point is a good one. I'll put a cloth over the nozzle. (My air has a pre-hose trap and filter but easy for tiny bits to get through; or for the intake nipple to pick up particles.

I like your disclaimer. For auctions we include "announcements made the day of sale take precedence over written ..."

Jon, I tried very hard to get a clear picture of the broken bit from the white 25-tooth gear stuck in the depths of the transparent clear ring gear. The camera has a hard time with it, and I suspect many of our older eyeballs do too. No, the hard clear stuff is not broken.

The problem with using compressed air isn't the contamination of the air itself, but the environment (dirty workbench, garage floor, etc.) as collateral source of the metal we saw, grind, and file on. It is picked up by the magnetic ring in the speedometer gauge, and one filing on end will intermittently impede the moving coil. Talk about impossible to remove...

But aside from that, air blasting doesn't give you any feedback on effectiveness. It is just a guess and a blind shot. Even if you use a computer duster in a clean room. You know the missing tooth is in there; find it.

          Hi Art!

          I loved your standard disclaimer!

I would like to add one.

"Subject to change if the weather does."

I see you are going to get some more rain by the end of the week.
The 200 board sure is running "dry" on good subject challenges.

          Phil

Yes, I agree Phil. Both RWD and Opinions have become more like each other. I'll post one "over there" for an off topic tech discussion. It is the discussion I enjoy, in addition to providing frequently supplied answers to itinerant visitors. Or cut-and-paste humorous disclaimers.
