Intermittent dock lock failure -- rear door 1993 240 w/central locking 200

In the latest head scratcher, one of the rear doors on my 1993 240 (291k miles)will sometimes not unlock. Central locking (lock actuator) appears to be working as the lock knob moves up and down and I can hear the mechanism in the door operating. The problem occurs intermittently. When the problem occurs, the door cannot be opened from inside or outside the car. The

I have disassembled the door in the past and readjusted the connecting rod for the door handle. I have also lubed all of the internals of the lock/latch mechanism.

Is the problem likely to be a faulty actuator or is there another adjustment I should be aware of? Is the problem somehow associated with the child-proof lock?

Thanks
-AR

If you get inside and manually pull up the plunger, can you open the door when it fails to unlock?

No, the pull knob on the top of the door panel will not unlock the door. I assume this is what you mean by plunger.

        That is the plunger.

This is not an electric lock problem so strike that from the list.

Does the plunger work to independently lock and unlock that door normally?

What it is I do not know but it is either a binding lock mechanism or a completely failed child lock thingy. Maybe the striker is loose?

Not having a 240 at my disposal, I personally would suggest just finding a replacement lock mechanism.

The next time you can unlock the door and get it open, remove the interior door panel so you have access to everything, and leave it off. Then if the stuck lock situation becomes permanent, you can get in there and repair it.

I didn't do this and after the occasional warnings appeared, had a permanently stuck-locked-closed rear door on my S90 with no way to remove the panel and attempt repairs. I eventually sold the car like that - at a discount. Besides, it's not safe to have a door that cannot be opened.

With the panel removed you can operate the linkages by hand, while perhaps disconnecting them one at a time to see where the stuck part is.
