Pulsating lights 200 1992

I've noticed the last couple of times when I park the 245 in my garage that the dash lights and I think the headlights too are pulsating slightly. Don't notice this when I'm out driving, even at night. Is this indicative of alternator brushes that will soon need replacement?

The voltage regulator is attached to the back of the alternator with two screws. It is not necessary to remove the alternator from the car to replace the regulator. Put the car up on ramps or stands and you have access from the back.

As you suspect, the brushes are likely culprit. This is particularly so if one of two things has happenned:

A brush with still adequate length is "hung" (cocked a little bit so it cannot exert pressure on the commutator)
On of the brushes is so worn that only the trailing edge (that gets the least wear) is making intermittent contact

Is the pulsing rhythmic and increasing with frequency as you raise the engine speed slightly over idle? Is more a fade in and out that seems random?

this sounds like classic voltage regulator failure.
to confirm check the voltage of your running car by running a meter across the + - terminals on your battery.

above 14.6 and you have a problem.

pulsing would suggest your voltage exceeds 15

if so fix it now by replacing with new regulator
