Separating 86+ Bumper Trim? 200

Hi All,

Does anyone know how the bumper trim on 1986 and newer bumpers is assembled? I'm referring to the thin chrome/stainless and black rubber trim that goes around the top of the front and rear bumpers, sometimes referred to as hockey sticks.

I'd like to disassemble mine to clean up the rubber and maybe polish or powdercoat the metal. If I try to gently take it apart it doesn't seem to want to come apart, and I have no desire to break it by being ham-fisted.

Has anyone ever taken these apart and then successfully put them back together? They seem to be glued or bonded somehow.

Thanks as always for the info!

There are 4 spring steel type clips attached to the fender, lift up on the back end and it should release. The clips can rust with age and you may need to replace them.

Sorry, I wasn't clear I think. I've got them off the car no problem, I want to separate the metal part from the black rubber part, and I don't see how they come apart.

OK, I don't think that would work out for you.

Meaning it can't be done?

Yes they appear to be molded around the SS piece.

Hrmm. I wonder if I can separate them without damaging the rubber part. If so I bet I could reattach them, maybe using small plastic rivets.

You are probably the first to do this, so report back and tell us how it's done.

If I have any kind of luck I will.

Practice on spare one first. Once you take the rubber off it will not go back on they way they came from the factory. Even trying to "glue" a loose end of the black plastic is difficult. Make sure you have extras.
