Wide tires 63 544 444-544

Hey to all, Has anyone ever rolled the lip of the fender to clear wide tires. I wanted to use a nice set of 15 inch GB Laguna`s 5.5 wide (looks like Mini Lites) with new 195 65 BF Goodrich tires that I had for a 140. I used a one inch adapter changing the bolt pattern also to clear the upper wishbone on the front suspension. The tires fit and look great other than slightly close to the fender lip. I`m wondering if the fender roller that you mount on the hub with lug nuts will be strong enough to bend the heavy gauge steel these fenders are made of? The lip only needs to come out no more than a 1/4 inch. Not a problem if the paint were to crack because she`s headed for paint when the bugs get sorted out. Thanks for any help! Larry

Not withstanding the fact that you have these new tyres, I would be considering using 185/65/15 or even the standard 165/80/15 tyres on the Lagunas. Shouldn't need spacers with at least the 165's. Modern rubber gives grip and driving feel that wasn't dreamed of back in the day. Unless you're doing hard running track days and need the ultimate grip, a PV will handle better and feel much nicer to drive on the narrower tyres. The front suspension is primitive at best and doesn't work any better with bigger and heavier wheel/tyre combinations. Yes the suspension can be beefed up, and that is fine for the track, but not for touring. Just saying........

After looking things over I think I will put the original wheels back on for now. To flare the fenders out slightly will interfere with the chrome spears on the side of the fenders because they are so close to the lip. It looks like 16 inch rims would be a better choice to clear the upper control arm that way the rim could sit inward a bit more. Maybe even widen the stock wheel, who knows? I can tell ya these Laguna`s look great. I may run them on the 740 or trade them off for something different. I already had them and hoped they could be used. I agree that the stock wheels work fine for normal street use but I like the look of filling the wheel well up a little more and for a bit more road contact. Larry

Hey, Hee hee hee , We done the PVC schedule 40 trick and all is well. The tires clear just fine now and no money wasted. The car looks fantastic. ! I can always go back to the original tires if need be. The fenders still look stock. Thanks for the help. Larry

I have used a kid's wooden baseball bat and a regular bat on a 122, and 140, allowing the tire to roll against lip and absorb/indent from the bat as someone very slowly drives down the driveway. Not much lip on a 544, are you going to also "bow" it out a bit? schedule 80 PVC prob. would work in available size to roll between tire and lip. this device you mentioned sounds interesting. Let us know how it all works. love the Lagunas
