The lighter works in my '90 740 GLE, but none of my usb chargers work.
They work in my other bricks.

Anyone run into this or something like it? Hints or help appreciated.

940 cigarette lighter sockets are touchy with anything except the cigarette lighter. It seems like the outside diameter is a larger than the springy grounds contacts on a adapters I have been able to get some adapters to work by twisting them a little looking for the LED to light up. I usually use a larger no brand 1 to 2 adapter with slightly larger ground contacts.

I have found that some of the cheaper USB chargers are simply not long enough for the rear button contact to reach the end of the lighter socket. Many of them have angled necks that prevent you from pushing them all the way home to the bottom of the socket. Take of the trim piece, measure the depth and look for a unit that will fit all the way inside.

I used my cigarette lighter socket for for my MP3 FM transmitter and and it was intermittent from time to time. It wasn't bad enough for me to dig into it to see what was wrong. I've now decommissioned my Volvo and replaced it with a Dodge Magnum because there were just too many things that needed fixing that I'd let slide and the last straw was another leaking steering rack.

Anyway, The Magnum's cigarette lighter socket was much worse and only worked intermittently 10% of the time. So I got a Dremel with a burr tip and cleaned up the rivet in the middle at the bottom of the socket. It now works all the time. It looks like when these are used for lighting cigarettes that rivet, which is where all the chargers make contact, gets badly corroded from the toxic fumes.

I will ck for corrosion, but I don't think this car was ever smoked in.

Had not thought of trying a socket from another brand car, but that is a good idea.

Pull a part sometime in the near future, hopefully.

Try taking off the trim piece that surrounds the socket and try the USB charger again.
