1957 PV444 - three speed vs four speed. 444-544

What modification are needed to replace my three speed with a four speed transmission. I'm thinking about getting another B16 engine with a four speed transmission. Rebuilding both might be easier than repair the B16 in the car.

Any reason if you are doing a repower why not drop a b18 and m40 in there. Not a PV guy so just spit balling, some peopleike to keep it original i like to keep it strong anx practical.

Keeping the engine a B16 due to having a VO Judson Super Charger. Just brought a used B16 with transmission attached. Just wanted to know if I have to modify the trans. Tunnel for a four speed. It's a stock 4 speed so I'm sure it bolts right in. I'm planning on re-building the used B16 and 4 speed trans. Just for the Judson. Don't want to super charge a worn engine. Thanks Everyone for the suggestion.

Judson Supercharger? --- Waahoo!!! One of my first cars was a 1960 Bugeye Sprite on which a previous owner had installed a Judson. With the original 948cc motor (42hp) the car would go 0-60 in 25 seconds (Road & Track road test-1958) -- with the Judson it could do sub 11 seconds. Have fun! -- Dave

No modifications are needed, but make sure you get the driveshaft as the front half is different for a 4 speed.

    The 4 speed could be a M4 or a M40.

And Phil is mistaken. The M40 for a B16 has a special transmission case so it fits on any of the B16/B14/B4 bellhousings.

Aha -- I knew the bolt spacing was different, but thought it was the bell housing instead of the transmission case. Thanks for the correction.

I believe the 4-speed behind that B16 should a M4 gearbox if it's stock. I've heard of some B16 / M40 combinations though I think the B16 cars did not have a M40 from the factory.

Not 100% sure, but I think it would be a straight swap from 3-speed to M4. If you're stuck for dimensions, I think I have a M4 in the cellar that I could take a few measurements.

I would have to be the M4. I think some very late B16s used the M40, but the bell housing is different.

I owned a 1961 PV544 for the fours of college. It had an M4. You've worked a lot more old Volvos than I have, but I never saw an M40 behind a B16.
