Turbo Oil Cooler Hoses 900

My son's 940 turbo last had its turbo oil cooler hoses replaced eleven years ago when he drove off to grad school. He had the car back here and we decided "all new hoses". I took off the oil cooler hoses and as I expected, they were severely deteriorated from oil dripping off the filter whenever it is changed. They were worst above the clamps but stiff softening below. So advice for all: if your turbo oil cooler hoses are aging and older than about 8-9 years, consider replacing them as cheap insurance against sudden coolant loss.

    Dear Steve,

Hope you're well. Over the years, I've read similar posts. I do not own a turbo-equipped engine, so my suggestion below is made with some diffidence.

Would it be possible to keep oil drips away from oil cooler hoses by wrapping the hoses with aluminum foil, or with a stainless or aluminized tape? Aluminum is an efficient heat conductor, so the wrapping should not accelerate hose deterioration.

Or, is there simply no room for even a single thickness of aluminum foil or tape? I ask, because I put braided stainless steel sleeves over heater hoses, to limit blow-out risk. As heater hoses are hard to inspect - because of location - I figured that the stainless sleeving would do no harm and might be helpful.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I think the easiest and most reliable approach is to (1) use only Volvo OEM hoses and (2) change about every 6-8 years. In this oily location, I would not risk cheaper aftermarket hoses.

        Dear Steve,

Hope you're well. I pre-supposed use of Volvo brand hoses. Where a hose is mission-critical cost does not matter. It is impossible to know by inspection how rubber was formulated and processed.

Thus, when I replace heater hoses, I use only Volvo brand: they will last for 15 years, in northern US or Canada (less in high-temp areas, e.e., US South/Southwest, or tropics) Even so, I sleeved the hoses in braided stainless steel, to reinforce them.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

One other tip is, for users in the Rust Belt, to install stainless steel Breeze Liner clamps in any application subject to salt spray. I have these on our cars and they are amazing: zero corrosion after ten year, even in spots like the turbo oil cooler hoses, fuel tank sender hoses etc.

            Dear Steve,

Hope you're well. Further to your suggestion, when installing clamps, I pack with lithium grease, the helical gear, that moves the clamp's band. The grease keeps water and dust out of the mechanism, so easing clamp removal.

For in-place clamps, I loosen the clamp slightly, pack with grease, and tighten.

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

            Spook
