Finally installed: KYB 4-Way adjustable struts + kittysgreyvolvo 200

After many months of life events interfering, finally had my wife's '89 244 in and my KYB 4-Way adjustable struts installed. They've been on my self for 10 years since I got a couple sets on close-out a long time ago. Worked fine on our '81 245, and now they seem just fine, in spite of NOS older age, on our 89. Have yet to click them onto a firmer ride. Kittysgreyvolvo gave me lots of encouragement months ago, and probably thinks I've disappeared. Not so, just health issues with wife bogs things down.

I wonder how many of you remember these struts? Removing strut tower dome-cap, reveals the 4-color adjustment right on the strut rod. They come with little key to adjust them.

Regards to all,
Dennis in E WA state

Hi Dennis!

Congratulations your were able to install the KYB 4-Way adjustable struts!

I'm very glad to have helped, somehow. Though I sometimes regret going on for so long at length. Thank you kindly, tho.

And you and Ms. Dennis and everyone are all aces and eights? I hope and trust you've moved past any and all health issues. Ms. Dennis is in the pink and right as rain, now, yes!

I had hoped to see an image of these KYB 4-Way adjustable strut cartridges, or at least the box. These are a set of KYB 4-Way adjustable front struts and rear shocks? Did you perform any other part replacement while you were in there? Bushings and such? Ball joints, inner and outer tie rods? What about the strut mounts (Volvo PN 1272455)? These are now utter junk from the dealership and they can fail in some 10 months of normal motoring use. There's an article on the turbobricks and here. I only mention it as a safety issue.

I did not here from you in email when last I wrote you. So I guess you were busy. Had I gotten the Bureau of Reclamation writer job at the Grand Coulee Dam, I could have stopped in top lend a hand. The spring compressors are a work out, to be sure! Though where you are is not far at all from where I was in Spokane Valley. (I miss WA. MO sucks. MO-state is awful, dog-awful, and worse. Cool weather is here in MO. Civility momentarily returns.)

How is the ride now with the new (old stock) front struts (and new rear shocks)? Has to be a terrific improvement!

The KYB website includes a damper (dampener?) model range named AGX.

These are manually adjustable

Using the dial or a screwdriver so says the video.

I did not ever know KYB offered adjustable dampers (struts and shocks) for Volvo 240. There used to be so many brands and models for 240. I'm sort of jealous a little bit what you gave installed now!

Welp, glad to help. I did not know I was being motivational. Sorry not to have been able to stop in to help you with your rear wheel drive Volvos before I left. (Wish I had not left, sort of.) Not to far to where you and Ms. Dennis reside.

How is the ride, though? Your 1989 Volvo 240, a sedan, yes, is also in fine fettle?

My three 240s continue to rot in the open, uncovered, in the slimy midwestern heat and here come the equally slimy winter. In no way a joyous Winter like you have in WA or North Idaho or in MT-states. The pollution is awful here.

Sorry to go on so. Glad to help. And Thank you,

Almonds, Shredded Wheat, and Earl Grey Tea (hunny and milk) Breakfast Boy.

Kittysgreyvolvo and all:
Good to hear from you. So you have escaped from Spokane....I did not know that, but have not been able to keep up with much of the Brickboard postings of late. My best wishes to your future in MO.
As far as an image of these KYB 4-Way adjustables.....just picture a typical replacement strut, Gold in color in this case, with a different tip on the upper rod end. The upper end being only 3/8ths of an inch or so in diameter, there is not much room there. That end has 4 colors in a ring and a very small adjusting slot in the center. Pop the plastic dome cap off the upper strut tower, and one is looking right down at this rod end. Struts come with a little, "key." Once installed, adjusting is accomplished by pressing down with that key and turning to one of the 4 desired firmness settings: Soft, Normal, Firm and Extra Firm. Having just had these installed, I have not experimented yet with the settings but will over the next few days. Car handling seems steady and flat now, (it has IPD sway bars), so it's pretty good right now, however, I expect to run the struts in the, "Firm," setting.

Again, these are the first strut and shock replacements since we got this 244 new some 192,xxx miles ago.

Regards,
Dennis in E WA state
