Does anyone know the original tire size for a 1958 444 ? My car has 165 80 15 on there now. but a local guy is selling some new 5.60 X 15 whitewalls that he used on his VW. I know the 544 used 5.90 X 15. Was wondering if the 444 was smaller and if these would work ok ?

    Hi Mark,

    A little i-net searching and I found a 1959 PV 444 spec sheet in a PDF file here:

    Indicates tire size as 5.90-15" White sidewalls.

    They'd be fine for a show/display car but if you want reasonable comfort/handling/road holding stick with modern radials. Best to have them on another set of rims for shows only and use the radials for daily driving and trips. I don't think you'll like the driving characteristics of the 5.60's very much.

    One thing that you might get with VW tires is a slight wobble for a while after you start to use them.

    On both VWs that I owned, this would happen after a tire rotation.

    I figured that it was because the front wheels angled out a bit at the top and the rears angled in a bit at the top.

    I think that the tires took a - set - and they fought a bit at their new locations.

    They'll definitely work.. I can't find my book, so I can't confirm size, but they'll work. Price seems reasonable.

    Find out how long they've been on the VW.. you don't want flat spots from sitting (though VW being light, it's not likely a huge issue)
