beating the dead horse 120-130

I'm looking to select some tires from Tirerack today.
These are to go on a sedan that is used for both highway and around town driving.

On 4" wheels, I'd like to err on the size being larger rather than smaller diameter for better mileage.
It's running a B20 with J type OD.

From the archives mostly people seem to like 185 65R 15 (on a wagon with 4.5" wheels), but they are said to be a bit smaller diameter than stock 165 15.

Will these be too wide for the 4" wheels?

It had been recommended that I get 185 70R15,(Kumho Powerstar 758, but not available) but the only tire I'm finding in that size is a $200 Pirelli.

Anybody have experience with with a Kumho Solus TA11? $57.25/ea

thanks
Daniel

The bolt hole pattern on the 120 is very common. There afe many aftermarket rims, other OEM rims that will fit. These days decent selection in15" tires is a problem in any profile. If you look on the fb Amazon page there are many 120s with different rims. I have yet to it as there is still meat on my 15s but when the time comes I'll .jump up to 17s but maintain close to the original tire OD. Fwiw you can even find wider Ford rims with the same bolt pattern and relative offset for little $

The bolt pattern is 5 bolts on a 4 1/2 " bolt circle. This was common to Ford and Chrysler products of the 1960's.

I have used 195/65R-15 tires mounted on 4.5inchx15inch wheels from a P1800 or 220 wagon on my 1222S. A friend of mine is also running this combination on his 544 with no problem.

You really limit yourself by sticking with 4" rims. 165/(80)-15 is going to be your best, largest diameter bet. Even 185/65 will be smaller in diameter, and it'd be a stretch to put them on 4" rims.

If you can find some 5.5" rims, you have lots more options.
