704Turbo fuel delivery problem 700

Okay had the 91 740 running fine, have driven it to work and back a couple of days. Stopped and filled it up and started to leave, it died and will not run. It is a fuel delivery problem, any suggestions where to start, going to check the relay tomorrow.....

That's exactly what happened to me - totally surprised by a fuel pump dying.
It started up and idled for about 4 seconds and then shut off. Cranked and never coughed. Tested and poked around and I had voltage at the pump with the relay terminals jumpered. So I whacked the fuel pump 7 or 8 times and BINGO.

Jumper the right terminals (87 to 30 maybe?) and give the pump a whack and see if it starts up again.

Nothing like leaning out of the car into traffic to rap under the seat with a wrench while I cranked the car XD

Good Luck

Sorry for the slow response, did replace the relay, drove the car back to Georgia, over 500 miles and it is still running fine ! Surprised the jumper never worked, although I tried it several times, replaced the relay and it started every time , would not on the old one. THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP AND INPUT !!

Okay tried jumping the pins as described in the FAQ page, no change, but when I plugged the relay back in it tried to start, so when I kept thumping on the relay the car started running?! This worked 3 or 4 times, then no more. I ordered a new relay should be here by 3 today. Hope this works. Any words of wisdom are appreciated.

If you did jumper it properly, the pump should have run. You may have a dying fuel pump. Since you say it's a fuel issue. Have you confirmed you have spark when it doesn't start?

Yep we did confirm spark. Found out I did NOT have the relay jumpered out correctly, found a diagram and will try again after work.
Thanks for the input.

Since it isn't starting at all, it does sound like it could be a relay problem. Quite a while ago I had the relay in 90 240DL die. It would crank and crank and crank and but would not fire. Is your car doing that? Fortunately I had a spare so I replaced it and all was well. Let us know what happens after you replace the relay. If necessary, we can help you do some more troubleshooting.

Quick sidebar: I owned my 90 240DL for 11 years. During that time I never had a fuel pump relay go bad and 240's are notorious for bad fuel pump relays!! So, as soon as I put the car up for sale naturally it decides to go south...:)

I was chasing a problem recently and read something in the FAQ about the relay. If you snap the cover off and the solder joints look good you can install the relay without the cover. If you don't have a jumper, it's possible to reach under there and manually move the levers with your fingers while cranking to diagnose.

Yup, could be a dying fuel pump. Assuming it is a fuel issue (but check for spark), have you tested the fuel pressure at the rail? Also check the fuel pressure regulator while there. Pull the hose off the front of the regulator and look for fuel. If yes, it's replacement time.

Have not checked pressure , when it stops it is getting no fuel at all. My 760 turbo lost the pressure pump a few years back, this is not acting the same.

Pretty much what I would check. Jumper around the relay.
