B234 16v - exhaust mods 700 1990

Ok. Need expertise/opinion on exhaust for my '90 740 GLE 16v...please!

150k, motor runs like a champ. Stock exhaust is in great shape.

The car is so sporty driving (I imagine myself driving an older beemer at times), I thought a bit of sound and little more open exhaust might be good.

Just a BIT... mind you!

So my main question is how will this change how the 16v runs? I know the stock exhaust is supposedly set up from the factory to give best overall performance.

So, any recommendations? Positive or negative?

Thanks..

    B234 16v - exhaust mods ... check turbobricks.com 700 1990

    ... check turbobricks.com.

You can use a search engine to target turbobricks.com for articles on modded B234 exhaust set ups. Some do so to add Turbo and even Super charging to a B234.

I'm sure you find normally aspired B234 exhaust mod threads also.

Some facebook groups or some of the Volvo performance sites in Europa can help. Yet if it is a B234 quattrovalve head, they alwasy seem to want to add some type of induction charging.

    Hope that helps.

    cheers,

    dud.

    Andrew,
There are sport exhausts made for 8v 240 cars(ipd for one) and the 740 and 940 cars (OBX). I'm not sure about the 16v though. I would call ipd or some other performance specialists who have experience with the 16v-a rare bird for sure. Good luck.

There is an electronic device that you can buy that connects to your ignition and your radio.

It can make your car sound like a Ferrari, Lambo, or several high performance cars.

    See - VroomBox.com

Road & Track actually thought that it worked quite well, but they tired of it quickly - just as many people who modify their exhaust systems tire of the drone on the highway and the loss of performance.i

Your engine is pretty well optimized and I do not think that exhaust mods will work well unless you also change the intake system, computer and ignition system.

Decent exhaust sound is a problem on many well developed engines - formula 1 is changing their rules to make the cars louder! Even though their current turbos produce ample power on half the fuel they used several years ago.

Several performance cars have ports in their firewalls to allow engine sound into the passenger compartment.

Don't mess up a rare and sweet engine.

You could try eliminating the first muffler, as was offered aftermarket on the 240 8v, basically the turbo exhaust.
I seem to remember from working on these, that a larger diameter exhaust was sometimes used. Larger pipe and only one muffler would definitely change the tone, and amplitude!
        It could get tiresome though.
To get more of the Bimmer feeling, I would put on IPD bars and better shocks, then upgrade to the 16" wheels and get some summer only tires.

        Have fun, and be safe.

Had the IPD turbo exhaust on my NA 240. Not too loud, pleasant sound. Certainly more interesting tone than a stock 240 exhaust!

As James mentioned, downside is more of a drone on the highway but the turbo exhaust is better than most in that regard.
