Screen under vent at wipers 700 1990

The screen under the air vent at the wipers has fell down into the cavity below on my '90 740GLE.

I note on my 940 it is attached up high.. close to the actual vent.

Is there a way to pull the screen back up and attach it? Seems it can't be done, but thought I would ask.

Thanks...

Tips -

There may be spacers at each end of cowl - these may fall off and get lost.

Mark the wiper locations with tape before you remove the wipers. Better yet, observe wiper sweep, see if rest position should be adjusted.

Clean splines on wiper posts with a wire brush so that they grip better. some people put a bit of locktite on the splines.

If you have had problems with the wipers coming loose, my first fix is to add a washer to the post - this squashes the arm down further on the spline. My second fix is to wrap about three turns of FINE copper wire (like from a small electronic transformer) around post - it crushes and provides some grip. After second fix - get new wiper arms as the holes in their ends have gotten too large.

When I tied the grill up to the cowl with eight small zip ties (black on a black cowl) - I left them on and no one seems to mind! I did our other 3 740s the same way.

Don't forget to remove as much debris as you can. I attach a small section of 1/2 inch hose to the vacuum cleaner hose with tape - I cut the end at an angle so that it does not stick to the car in tight places. Works well under the refrigerator and in the clothes dryer.

When I need a new windshield, I remove the wipers and cowl - that way, no one with ham hands will damage them - also the windshield guy will appreciate having to do less work.

I remove the cowl piece, clean the old adhesive off, and glue the screen back on. I hold the screen in place with string or plastic wire ties, and install the cowl piece. In a few days, when the glue is set, I cut what I used to secure the screen, and pull it out.

For glue I've generally used 25 year adhesive caulking, like you'd use in a bathroom or on building siding. Clear is best.

Thanks.

I did not know the cowl piece could be removed.

Pretty straightford? Any pitfalls you might point to in your experience?

Just three screws hold the cowl vent in place. One on each side where it meets the fenders, and one in the center. The one in the center is about three inches down, it also has a 10mm head. It should be a two person job to remove and re-install the cowl vent. The hood needs to be open 45 to 90 degrees. Pull the cowl vent forward and carefully work it out from under the hood. Re-installation is the same, be sure the cowl vent slips under the plastic retainers at the bottom of the windshield.

Here's the description. I'll add I was able to remove it by myself but needed another set of hands to re-install.
