pre pump problem when replacing filter 200

On my 1990 240, yes the one that sometimes stalls, I was finally working on changing the main fuel pump/fuel filter and changing the in tank filter screen. When I was trying to get the little pre pump hose off I slipped and hit the wiring. There is a little brown plastic thigamajig that where the wires to the pre pump come out of. I accidentally pulled the copper coils out of there and stretched them when I hit it. There is a small piece of either carbon or steel that the copper wires are wound around for both the positive and negative. I don't know if this is some kind of transformer or electo magnet. But I can't seem to get the wires back in and get it closed back up. I am thinking I will have to go to a salvage yard and buy a replacement and just swamp my pump and new filter. Any tips? Any idea the function of that wound wire? Any advice on how to proceed? thanks. It was very discouraging as it killed the project for now.
