142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

I got a pair of Karlyn upper ball joints. The originals have notches which are to me no more than 8 degrees off of the center of the upper control arm. The new balls joints don't have any notches.
Does anyone know how to find the center of the ball joint?
Thanks,
Steve

    142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

I removed the boot and the Karlyn joints are fully directional. They are pressed into the control arms and waiting for me to restore the cross member before I put everything back together.
The original parts manual shows two different upper ball joints. The Karlyn version looks like P/N 686398, instead of P/N 686500, in the illustrations in the catalog. Thanks for everyone's input.

By "fully directional" do you mean 360 deg. Thanks f possibly rotation? Just checking as it could also mean something else. Thanks

    142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

Well, I contacted the seller, and none of the Karlyn 10-341 ball joints have the indexing notch. I'm going to remove the boot and see if the stud allows for full range of movement. The originals only allowed 8 degrees forward / aft movement.
We'll see and I'll report back.
    Thanks,
    Steve

      142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

I believe you will find that the pin can move in all directions. A person at Karlynn told me that they never had clocking marks and he had been there for years. So I did what you are suggesting and found that there is no restriction in movement of the pin like the ones I removed from the car.

Someone here must have installed the Karlynn version. They might have never known the difference. However, if they installed the clocked version incorrectly they would have found out that there was a difference!

The question becomes, is there any difference in functionality? I am not sure but would like to know because I found a clocked pair to install instead and have the Karlynn version on the shelf.

    142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

I don't have a 140 so I'm not exactly sure what the set up is on the front end.

The upper ball joint looks like a press in piece. It is very hard to imagine that someone designed that type of ball joint that is asymmetrical. Is the threaded stem concentric with the body ? If not, how do you do an alignment ?

I'll be interested to hear what you find out.

    Greg

    142 Replacement Ball Joint Question 140-160 1973

As far as I remember the original upper ball joints construction limited their ability to flex sideways - hence the need to index the installation. Your replacements may allow movement in all directions. -- Dave
