TAB question 200 1991

The cluck at the rear appears to be due to bad trailing arm bushings. The sleeve has rusted away and I think that means they are bad... Do you have any concern with supporting the ears on the axle when pressing in new bushings ?

I have made up a bushing removal / installation tool as shown in the great link below. New Volvo bushings in hand (made in Slovak Republic), helpfully labeled with a directional arrow, and I also notice that they are oval - 2.28" X 2.23". Is this normal ?

You will need to keep the relationship between the two ears constant. If you try pressing the bushing in and one ear bends a bit it will bind and not move thru the second ear.

Yes, the Bushings are a bit Oval. They are also directional.
Look close. There should be an arrow on the Rubber end. I believe the arrow should be pointing to the ground when installed. The rubber is thicker on that side.
Also note that one end of the bushing is a smaller diameter then the other. Push the small end into the ears first. This will let you get the bushing almost all the way in before you need to get to Pressing.
Keep that in mind when removing the old one push it out toward the Differential and it should not take much to get it loose

Hi Greg,
If the sleeves have rotted away, the rubber will be long gone too. Replacing the 200 series cars' TABs and heater fans are a sort of initiation rite on this board, so take photos and report back on your success.

You could buy the tool Eric linked too, or you can quite easily make your own copy from plumbing parts by following these instructions:

And you are absolutely right, you need to have something to support the two ears. Here’s my version of The Tool:

Yes, you need to place something rigid in between the 2 ears to keep them from collapsing.

Of course there are special tools.
