Dear j.pelchat,
Hope you're well. What On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) codes, if any, show on OBD Port A, Position 3?
If no codes show, this is likely to be the result of an electrical fault, arising from a loose connection or corrosion. As only the ABS light comes on, the instrument cluster ground is not likely to be at issue.
I can recall no recent post involving an ABS module malfunction.
On the off-chance that this malfunction is rooted in a transient problem, write-down the radio security code and then disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal. Wait, say, 15 minutes, and then reconnect. This may clear the transient fault.
If the malfunction returns, so report, and we'll go from there. Among possibilities: a weak/failing connection between the speed sensor (mounted in the differential cover) and the ABS module or a weak/failing connection between the front wheel sensors and the ABS moduel. The speed sensor provides a singal to the speedometer and to the ABS module.
Has the speedometer been working normally? I ask, because if the speedometer has recently become inconsistent, that points to what is likely a wiring harness failure at the speed sensor, mounted in the differential cover.
The wires to the speed sensor are exposed for a short distance between the end of a black plastic protective sheath and the speed sensor's connector. If these wires' insulation has failed - and the wires have corroded - that could produce an inconsistent signal, and so cause the ABS light to come on.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
