Paranoid solenoid? V70 S90-V90

I am contemplating purchasing a 2002 V70 [T5] from a friend. The car is fairly low mileage for Volvo of that age (120000) and the friend tells me that there is a solenoid that has something to do with idling located in or around the housing for the timing belt. Back in the day, the solenoid was part of the starter. Now I understand that they are all over these cars. At any rate, the car runs and drives but has idle issues that his mechanic reports as attributable to this solenoid. Anyone have information as to what this is?
There is also a Volvo engine that is to be avoided according to the service guys. I don't believe the 5 cylinder is the one but don't know for sure. What is for sure is that the 4 cyl that was in my 940 was bullet proof in the Volvo tradition.
Also, I am not even sure that this is the right forum. There seems not to be a forum listing for the v70.
Thanks
Barrelhouse

Hi barrelhouse,

Other will give you the info to help you compare and contrast between the rear-wheel drive Volvo autos you know and the FWD / AWD (front-wheel drive / all-wheel drive) model Volvo autos you may be interested in here on this side of the brickboard.

https://www.brickboard.com/AWD/

Please see at the top of each page the each brickboard section list. See the AWD at the top. Click that and you'll access the section of the brickboard that contains all forum user content FWD / AWD (front-wheel drive / all-wheel drive) model Volvo autos. Klaus and folks will fill you in to give you insight into the FWD / AWD Volvo auto models that to occupy your fancy.

Though here, on the brickboard RWD section, you'll get good perspective from those, like you, that stated with RWD models that also may own or have moved on to FWD / AWD Volvo auto models.

Hope that helps.

Thank you.

Thanks Frosty!
I forgot that the v70 was a FWD car. I once knew I guess but FWD just doesn't register in my Volvo experience. A FWD station wagon should be interesting. Decades of Saabs and their decidedly Swedishness prepares me for most anything built with the "safety first" philosophy.
I have run several issues through the RWD forum over the years with great success. I have found all of these on line forums to be extremely useful. A MB forum saved me from blowing my 300D up with ether! An owner reminded me to disconnect the glow system! All of my farming friends got a charge out of that!
Thanks!
Barrelhouse

The solenoid is for the variable valve timing
