89 740 GLE 16-valve questions 700 1989

Howdy folks!

A few weeks before thanksgiving, I wrecked my 90 740 turbo. Spun out in the rain on an overpass after hitting a seam... stupid accident. Made 315,000 miles though!

Anyway, I've gotten a 740 GLE wagon in the mean time, and plan to move on to a super-efficient saturn in 6 months or so.

It's a bit of a mess. The interior is easy, and I'll pull a lot from my wrecked 740 to fix that. I cleaned up some easy things on the engine, flame trap, vacuum lines, brake booster lines, a bad gasket between the manifold and downpipe...

The engine is a bit of a mess, and this is where I'm looking for some advice. The flame trap came off and it had substantial oil leaks. It may still have some, but I haven't driven it anywhere. I'm concerned about the timing belt giving out, though it isn't wet, there is a fine layer of oil on the top of the idler pulleys. There was also a LOT of oil in the recesses for the spark plugs. I literally took a suction bulb and removed almost half a cup from some of them.

I have 2 sets (oops) of new cam seals, a new timing belt, and a new aux shaft belt. I've read up on the oil pump pulley and its bolt. I'm wondering if I should change the belts and seals immediately before I know the drive it a few hundred miles to see if the leaking has improved. It actually looks like it's fairly new despite the blown seals.

I also have a miss that's noticeable at low idle, but the engine smooths out over 1000 rpm. Pulling the #4 (from water pump) injector makes some difference, but not a lot. The spark is good and it showed 160psi on a compression test. I think it's a plugged injector. I do hear it click, but it doesn't seem to be flowing much.

I also bled the brakes, and noticed a substantial amount of oil on the inside of the Passenger side tire. There is no skid plate installed (there will be soon).
One other thing is, I found that the oil trap/breather box is no longer available ... from anyone. Part no. 1326251. I also found out I can't remove the thing without removing the intake manifold. I actually blew compressed air through it, and know it is clear.

So ... in summation, do I do the belts and seals immediately or wait until I'm sure the PCV situation is resolved? Can I expect the other oil leaks to mostly stop with the PCV system refreshed? That was quite a lot of oil ...basically everywhere.

Happy bricking!

The oil in the plug wells is likely due to a failed valve cover gasket - typical for a 16 valve engine. I'd replace that first, see what that fix does to the oil blowby problem.

Agree. Take care of the valve cover gasket first, then clean the motor so you can see any leaks. Mine was leaking at the rear of the motor...gathering on the exhaust pipes below.. till it would burn, making a choking stink in the cabin.

Flame trap clean? On a non turbo, gotta be clear.

Then if you don't know if the t-belt is recently replaced... before driving it much it will have to be replaced (interference motor), along with the balance belt. This would be the perfect time to replace front seals. Pretty sure you have a manual tensioner for that model.

Hope this helps. Note the 16v belts are way more critical and needs replacing properly. Not near as easy as a b230na/t motors. When mine needs it done, a reputable shop will handle it.

      Wish you well.
