And now for a game of GUESS. . . .THAT. . . NOISE! 200 1987

Took the car out for its first >20 mile drive in about 10 years today in the form of a commute to work. Noticed that every time the rear axle went over a bump/hole it made a deep series of clunks. Sounded kind of like someone was shaking a few batteries in a 2 liter soda bottle. Didn't matter which rear wheel hit the bump, but it was definitely from the back. Smoothed out quite a bit at highway speeds, though i didn't hit a ton of bumps on the highway either. I'm 90% sure it wasn't doing this before replacing the shocks. Any guesses what's causing it?

Here's the back story:
Car's been sitting in the garage for about 10 years. It's maybe been driven 10 times in this period.
Had to replace all four brake calipers this summer.
Took it to Big O for four new tires. The guy there told me I needed new shocks, struts, and front wheel bearings.
I usually take their recommendations with a grain of salt, but the shocks were old (~16 years is a good guess), and a crap brand, so they couldn't hurt to replace.
I'm starting to believe the strut recommendation, too, since there was a fair amount of "flutter" in the car this morning, making me think the front wheels are doing the failed-strut-vibrating thing.
Replaced the shocks myself. Had to struggle a bit to get the bolt holes lined up, but they went in. One of the biggest struggles was getting the sway bar hole to line up on the passenger side.

Also replaced the stereo yesterday and that didn't have power this morning. And had a headlight out. I don't need any help on those; I mostly just wanted to whine about it.

Thank you for all the input. Turned out to be a combination of a few things:
    1) I definitely didn't tighten up the upper shock mounting bolts enough. I guess I failed to realize that there was a nut on the other side, so I ended up backing it off when I tightened the nut down. This was the big source.
    2) Torque rod bushings were also shot. Those are replace and all is well.

I would look at the Torque Rod Bushings first. Trailing arm bushings second.
driving over a bump tries to rotate the axle. If the torque rod bushings are bad then it will let that axle rotate a bit.

Really...first? Before junk in the trunk or exhaust?

I agree of it is a bushing the torque rods are more likely.

You and others already mentioned Trunk noise. He sounded pretty sure it was Axle noise not just Rear of car noise. So , Yeah, on a car that sat for 10 years, I went with Rubber Suspension parts.

My rear end noise was more like a bowling ball rolling
back and forth. What it turned out to be was one of the
muffler rubber hangers was ripped and the muffler was
banging on every take-off and every landing.

    Good luck,
    Joseph in New Mexico

The simplest answer ... depends on your new shocks.

There are a few that have the *wrong* width steel sleeves that the mounting bolts go through. What brand did you install?

Also, do you happen to have some junk in the trunk rattling around? Seriously, even though it's funny, a loose jack can make that noise. I think the exhaust is pretty likely too. Climb underneath and grab hold of the (cold) exhaust pipe towards the rear and yank on it. Any noises? Torn rubber mounting thingers?

    Good luck!

Most rear end noises end up being the exhaust or crap in the trunk/smugglers compartments.

Exhaust is the gift that keeps on giving unless you do your own cat-back bolt together system. The over-the-axle pipe every muffler shop I have ever been to uses is going to clunk against the axle. Soft or torn hangers make it worse.

Stuff in the smugglers compartments is particularly a problem to find because you will not believe it is that simple so you will not check it. This goes for an unrestrained jack or tire iron or donut spare.

This is all assuming it is the rear u-joint frozen up or the center bearing carrier rubber being totally gone.

You left out all the bushings in the rear. they tend to give a clunk noise as well when going over bumps, but, we already know that don't we?

      Just my 2 cents.

      Matt
