The no start issue is back - B234 16v 700 1990

I will try to make this brief. '90 740 GLE.

A few months back the car would just not start after say ...stopping for gas. I would un-plug the injectors, purge any excess fuel by turning the motor over ...re-plug the injectors. Sometimes I did this about three times, and eventually it would start.

Then it just started doing good ...no issues, till a week ago. So I take both relays on the passenger side shock tower and have them re-soldered at a tv shop.

The tacky material inside the female connector is pretty much gone, so I clean it out, tighten the tension on the female metal connectors, and cover them in fish tank tubing (from faq). This makes everything tight. It starts.

It did, but after a trip into town this evening it is back to its old behavior.
Coming out of store ..no start.

I check the relays, all is tight. I swap one out with a spare. Still no start. I un-plug the injectors and re-plug. No start.

But then it does! I get home as fast as I can.

Help me figure this out, please. I have owned about 5 of the 700/900 series, and the radio suppression relay was always the issue. Missing something this time around.

Tomorrow I will look at the coil, crank sensor, and the ignition control module.

Thanks for any extra input.

Has to be in the relay connector 700 1990

Double checking the relays, I found a broke wire. I had an extra brass female connector and spliced that in.

Then it did start... drove it up the road and back.. died in driveway. Swapped to an extra relay... started again.

These brass female connectors seem to lose tension real easily. If I have a no start in the am, it may be about time to get a new Volvo part.

PS..
Just read the faqs a bit closer and it mentioned solder in the crimp where the wire meets the brass connector. Next step!
And I am thinking I was mistaken regarding a new Volvo part. Can't find anything! 😕

Why are you focused on fuel delivery? Have you checked for spark when you're in the no start mode?

Actually I not worried about the fuel delivery. The injector lead pull off and re-attach was related to something I read about getting rid of any excess fuel in case it was trying to flood after turning over a number of times.

Doing it this time more out of habit than thinking it is fuel delivery that is causing my issue.

When it runs, it runs fine. So rather than just replacing parts here and there, I am hoping it is a connection issue.

When this happened last time, I cleaned every ground I could find per the 700/900 faqs. So unless I missed a critical one somewhere, that job should be done.

This car has 150k on it and has been well cared for, but after 26 years, I know corrossion sets in... even when everything else looks pretty clean.

Thanks. Welcome to any and all ideas.

Does it crank every time?

Does it do this only when warm? Or when cold too? If only when warm it could be the starter. BTDT...

Make sure all the battery grounds are clean and secure. Clean and reattach if necessary. Check battery cables and alternator wiring too.

Do you have a multimeter? If so you can test the coil, ICM and crank sensor. Look for degraded wiring on all.

Yes, it turns over fine.

I thought initially outside temp had something to do with the peoblem, but not so much now.

After a 32° night, by 10am, it was 40° or so. It started & ran fine, so I drove a mile up to the $Gen. Only in there 10 min., it would not start. Pushed relay wires, pulled the injector leads and re-attached.. it started back up and got me back home fine.

As it warms a bit more I am going to use contact cleaner every where I can under the hood and re-attach everything. I am thinking it has to be a poor connection somewhere.

Thanks for the reply.
