Auto trans oil leak

I have a strange auto trans oil leak on my 940 Volvo dripping from the rear right hand side. I got under tightened up trans pan bolts was fine for two weeks started leaking again. Took car to mechanic put on a new trans pan seal cork one this time with sealer as well. Car was fine for two weeks leaking again same spot.
Can the bolts work loose with heat should i lock tight them in.?. When on the hoist he checked the return line seals no leaks there. Maybe the rear extension housing gasket could be leaking in the bottom right hand corner.

    The only seals that I ever replaced on 4 740s that we drove were the seals on the front of the engine, changed whenever a timing belt was changed (as an inexpensive prevention measure) and several transmission tail shaft seals.

    Is it possible that the leak is at the tail shaft?

      My 90 240 leaked at the tailshaft seal. Fairly common problem with high mileage automatic 240's. The transmissions are basically the same. 240 uses an AW70, 940 uses an AW71.

      Don't know if 940's have tailshaft seal leak issues. Check where the driveshaft attaches to the transmission. That is where you'll see the most fluid but because of the spinning parts it will spray fluid everywhere.

      Have you looked at the cooling lines themselves? 240 cooling lines were attached to the frame by a little metal bracket. Over time, the vibrations in the metal would cause the cooling lines to develop a hairline fracture underneath the bracket where it is impossible to see without removing the little bracket. BTDT too...:)

        Were the pan holes straightened before being reinstalled? I place the pan edge (facing right side up) along an anvil and use a ball peen hammer (ball down) at each hole--then give the B-P-H a whack to force the usually bulging opening down. Previous over tightening causes each hole to distort--then when reinstalled without correction the bulge bottoms out leaving the gasket unevenly tightened.
        As for the tailshaft being a source of leakage---very late AW70/71 transmissions use a bearing instead of a bushing at the output shaft (I don't recall the year of change) but the earlier bushings do wear in the tailshaft housing--there should be no play at the output flange. Bushing/seal replacement is an easy fix. -- Dave

          Yes, I remember reading about the switch from a tailshaft bushing to a bearing but I don't recall the year. Had to be MY 1991 or later as my car was a 90.

          To the OP: What year is your 940?

    I wouldn't use strong stuff like Loctite, RTV gasket sealer should be more than enough. One thing: Are the bolts torqued according to specification? The 700/900 FAQ says 4-5 ft-lb, which is not much. Overtightening could distort the pan slightly, creating a leak.

    My 240 wagon did this with the car parked at an angle for extended period (passenger side was lower).

    It took a spell to start leaking, but when I got it back up and running after about 6 months, I added some fluid and in driving it ...never leaked again.
