I am going to replace my timing belt, along with water pump, all belts, and 3 seals. Have about 250K? on it, thought I would replace tensioner too. Is URO brand OK? ITM brand is about twice as much ($30) as URO.

if it's a b230, maybe. a b234-NEVER!!!!!!

a b230 won't bend valves when the tensioner lets go. a b234 gets destroyed.

me, i wouldn't put a 15usd tensioner on anything, including a bicycle. get a real part, i might save a headache in the future. good luck, chuck.

OK, so which brand do you recommend? Plus, do I really need to replace it? I seem to recall a Volvo technician years ago tell me he never replaced an original. I just thought with 250k or so it seemed time.

it's a bearing, it will wear out. it's been replaced once at that mileage. is it noisy? been doing volvo's and other cars since 88 or so. i have replaced alot of tensioners in volvos before 250k. would like to know the sample rate the dealer tech you mentioned has. i would think he's seen alot more cars and bad tensioners than me.

i would buy an ina brand as they, i think, used to supply volvo when the 240/740 were new. btw, no one on rockauto's page make that bearing, they buy from someone else, except for uro. which mean you may get a uro in someone else's box. i would buy the kit from continental, good european brand that's oe for alot of cars in belts and hoses. they wouldn't buy a cheap bearing to put with their belt. good luck, chuck.

Maybe and maybe not, but I would at that mileage.

Better ask yourself: "would I mind (possibly) going back in again in a couple of months or would I rather not until it's time for another timing belt change?"

Hi Bonzo,

I've not heard of ITM brand timing tension for overhead cam redblock four-cylinder Volvo 240.

Yet we have INA brand, the same that comes in the Conti T-belt kit for 240.

The INA will endure two timing belt changes. So, change the INA tensioner every second timing belt.

Google shopping finds INA for 24$.

Research indicates Volvo OEM is made in Germany. Though who knows what's accurate on a web page, anymore. I'm unsure, yet seem to recall the blue box tensioners were Made in Germany, and than in Slovakia, both by INA. But I'd gotten after market INA for the last 20 years and more or so, I guess.

A cursory glance of ITM product quality rate poorly when searching, again using Google, for:

I agree with the your other respondent that INA is best, unless you want OEM Volvo, and that may be an INA.

fyi-itm is what remains of the old bap-geon stores and parts. they just rebox everything. didn't USED to be bad stuff, but they are so few and far between, i have no current experience. and so it goes, chuck.

Decided to change the order to FCP (which I always use)and get the INA. I was using Rock Auto because I was ordering some Toyota parts for a friend, I'll just use that for his parts. THanks

I have not used a URO timing belt tensioner, but most of their parts are junk. I wouldn't want replace the timing belt for a $30 savings even if the crapped out in my driveway. Cheaper parts always seem to cost more.

Setting on my shelf in stock is a Conti timing belt, 2 Conti drive belts, 2 Elring seals. I am ordering a GMB water pump, 1 Conti belt, 1 crank seal, 1 tensioner. So I don't need a whole kit, I just need a few specific parts.
