Missing speed signal but speedo works! 900

Hi guys,

I have been trying to fix my 960 Volvo. The car is in limp mode, OBD1 reads:

A1 232 missing speed signal, this code cannot be cleared!

A3 155 rear speed/abs sensor short circuit, I have checked the wire from the sensor to the trunk at the small connection box. The sensor itself gives resistance within the the normal range (1300 approx). I also check the voltage of the wires from the trunk to inside the car, and they give 0 Vs for the ground and 4.8 Vs for the green-white ABS wire, which I believe they are good. This code 155 is clear-able, but it comes back after driving.

The car has no ABS light, and the speedo works as well. My cruise control doesnt work and show no codes.

Any suggestions?

Is the yellow wire connected to the back of the instrument cluster? It provides speedometer signal to both the radio and the cruise control. Since you say the speedometer works, either (as Art writes) the signal is not getting to the terminal or the yellow wire is not connected. Steve Ringlee experienced a cruise control failure caused by an internal failure of the speedometer, but speed still registered.

    What year 960?

      Hi,

The wires that goes from the speed/ABS sensor at the back are brown white (ground) and green white (carries the ABS signal) are intact. The yellow wire, you mean the yellow gray? I believe that one goes from D1 (double pin) at the back of the cluster to the ECM and cruise control module is connected.

My car is 1995 has Yazaki cluster, someone mention the ground of the speedo can come lose, but that is in the older cluster (1992 I think). The newer cluster has screws on the back of the speedo and some of them are the ground connector.

All connectors are plugged in at the back of the cluster. The A1 232 code is immediately recognize by the TCM once the ignition is one and cannot be cleared.

You are correct on the wire color. Earlier cars used a plain yellow wire. As Art suggested, the problem is likely in the speedometer. Steve Ringlee had the same experience with the cruise control on his late model 940. A replacement speedometer cured the problem. The two 1995 940 instrument cluster spares on the shelf have the yellow/green, and a blue/white crimped together into the connector.

If you are looking for a used instrument cluster, the wiring connectors for the 1994 and earlier 900 series are not the same. I think the S90 instrument cluster is the same. I've made repairs to the printed circuit tracks on several 940/960 instrument clusters. The power to the warning lights often fails, and they don't work. My primary concern was the low coolant warning level.

The signal the cruise and engine management uses is generated by the speedometer but not itself used by it, so there's nothing unusual about missing VSS with a working speedometer. That's especially true with the 900 with its fragile cluster panel circuitry and problems with the corrosive leakage on the speedometer circuit board. See the 700/900 FAQS and if you're technically inclined, have a look at http://cleanflametrap.com/speedo7.html

I don't drive a 7/9, but someone who does found a bad connection he could easily repair where the output for VSS is routed at the back of the cluster. Maybe it is in the FAQ too.

Thanks for the links. I think the 1995 cluster is a bit different compared to the older ones (1991-1993). I will try to check whether the speedo is generating the signal to the ECM and cruise control. What makes is a bit difficult is that the cruise control has no light on the cluster to indicate whether its on or off (like what Toyota has for example), right?
