Caliper, broken casting, rusted pin 200 1991

When your (ABS) caliper is so rusted that you break the casting trying to remove the pin.

Oddly (sadly), all 4 of the pistons work smoothly.

Sorry to hear that, Jon. It seems the ABS Girling 4-pots are somewhat scarce (but not as scarce as ABS masters) such that the rebuilders are resorting to the conversion of non-ABS units. See this : http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=330517

By the way, off topic, the rodent marks were a puzzle to me until I saw your post. However I never saw so much artwork as you got!

hi arty b- curious about your comment re: abs and non abs masters. my 92 245 has abs. looked at the master cyl and it looks like other older masters. what is different about the abs type. there is an abs box below it with hydraulic lines on it. curious b/c one day it will need to be swapped out due to loss of pressure and leak signs on the front ofthe brake booster. will have to check on their scarcity at reillys or auto z. thanks tons oldduke

they must be different, otherwise volvo would use the same part and number for the abs cars as the non-abs.

1330799 is the old setup to 77 with lines out both sides.

1330800 is the 1 we all know from 78-90 with lines out 1 side.

8241131 is the abs cars only, nla from volvo and trw(probably the oe vendor).

        good luck, chuck.

now wait a minute pork, are you telling me my 92 245 w/abs takes a scarce master cyl 8241131? and it is no longer available in the aftermarket. would joints like ipd or fcp likely have it? so if im trying to out run coppers at 115mph on tobacco road and the master blows i should just whistle dixie or go to the volvo dealer in clip city? not a pleasing thought. thanks tons oldduke

      Thanks for the comments Art.

      1. I avoid 240s with ABS unless they're going to be parted. Just adds one more maintenance item to a25-year-old car.

I asked once about converting an ABS 240 to non-ABS - mostly because I was short on ABS parts. You were one of those who dissuaded me from the attempt.

But the project at your link is the opposite. Interesting idea.

      2. Rodents: The pics I posted were of the most dramatic example so far. All of my cars have had some marks. Even my driver which I'm working on right now. The closer they're parked to the house - where the dog and cats are - the less the rodent damage.

Yes, I've seen marks from time to time and puzzled over them briefly but never made the connection to claws. Very enlightening. Thank you.

"But the project at your link is the opposite. Interesting idea."

Just to clarify this trick; it wasn't someone doing this in his garage, this was a part bought at the auto parts store. A re-built caliper from a rebuilder claiming to be the best but still winding up with a lousy reputation among forum dwellers, as you see from the thread referenced. A rebuilder would have had to machine plugs capable of sealing the flared openings and drilled a passage to join the two circuits -- absolutely nothing I'd attempt from my complement of home tools.

As to your preference for non-ABS, I do indeed have the opposite view. Though it costs some more in maintenance, I believe ABS is a useful thing to have. Only one of our family has it in a 240, and that is in a '93. The '93 240 is a different animal in so many ways, some good and some not so.

Another point in favor of having ABS is the lower cost of insurance. I had an eye opener last year when I parked the '84 245Ti and replaced it with a 2002 S40. Insurance is high here on Long Island. Before the S40 our two non ABS/SRS 245's ran us about $1200 each per year--for simple liability (more than minimum) only. Our policy had just renewed when the S40 went on and the revised bill showed a saving of $600 for the year.

I've asked our insurance company about that a couple of times when I've switched from a non-ABS to an ABS 240

            1. Once it went up switching from a 1989 to a 1993. "More expensive parts" they thought but they weren't sure.

            2. Another time it did go down switching from a 1990 to a 1993. They couldn't explain.

            3. And a third time I mentioned that the replacement car had ABS and they said it didn't show ABS on their sheet.

My rates seem more affected by miles-driven and garage/street parking. Our 240s have liability & comprehensive only.

(IDC though: I have few parts for the ABS cars and don't like the older ABS.)

jon_h --- you wrote that "Our 240s have liability & comprehensive only." I'm no authority on insurance policy language but doesn't comprehensive mean fire-theft and collision? My cars are insured for liability only. If I crash into someone or something my insurance covers the damage I cause (up to the specific limits of my policy). It also can cover personal injury to my victims. Damage to my car is on me. NY is a "no-fault" insurance state (as far as medical) so our own insurance covers our medical bills - don't have to wait for the other guy's insurance to step up--the insurance companies fight it out among themselves as to fault. If my car is hit (happened 3 times-no injuries) I duke it out directly with the other guy's insurance company under his (or her) liability coverage.--Dave

I'm no expert on insurance terms either but Ohio seems to be:

                1. Liability
                1a. Uninsured motorists coverage
                2. Comprehensive: fire, theft, a building collapses on the car, deer strikes
                3. Collision

I also have an umbrella policy that adds to the liability.

And I have separate insurance on my trailers: they are covered for liability when hooked to my truck but you need a separate policy for theft, collision damage,....

Comprehensive is cheap and deer strikes are a common occurrence in this rural area.

1a. is my fav: Auto insurance is mandatory here so I pay extra to cover people who break the law.
