Alternator Adj Bolt and Striker Plate Orientation 200 1993

My adventures continue...

I was adjusting the alternator belt tension, and the bolt head snapped off. No big deal, at least I think. But after inspecting, I have a few questions

- what is the orientation of the striker plate that the adjustment bolt screws into? Should it be on top or bottom of the lock nut? Mine is on the bottom. I ask, because while tightening the adjustment bolt, it bent such that the longer part of the bolt below the striker plate interferes with the alternator fins that rotate behind the pulley. I took the A/C adjustment bolt and used it for the alternator and had the same result - both bent, but the head did not snap. I suspect the striker plate may need to be flipped, but it does not look like there is enough clearance from the water pump pulley.

- are the adjustment bolts for the alternator, A/C and P/S all interachangeable?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

The bolt should not have been bent. Why this happened should be clarified, because of the often made mistake of turning the adjustment screw before unfastening the locking bolt. I would hazard that the bolt was never loosened, resulting in the problem you described.

The tensioning screw is not required, and tension can be applied with a pry.

Why and wherefore the bolt bent, is simply grist for the mill. And, I believe that once you take a close look at the bracket, you’ll find it only goes one way. Use a lamp and clean the area thoroughly. I prefer Tri-sodium-phosphate and a quick rinse with water. The product can be had for $4 at Home depot.

Locking bolt was loosened. When the first bolt snapped off, the alternator just fell back down. And I am not over tensioning the belt.

I think the bolt is bending because the striker plate is installed incorrectly, and that is what I am trying to clarify.

Thanks for the pry bar suggestion - I've read that in a few places, and will try when appropriate. But I still want to solve the tension bolt questions.

      Thanks.

To be sure, some have done exactly what the Goatman concluded, and once having examined what they did, become embarrassed enough to think they couldn't possibly have been the only transgressors.

One other cause for the jackscrew breaking is corrosion inside the alloy block. My reaction to that was to procure some stainless steel jackscrews. I'm doing OK with them, but it may not be the material as much as the renewal after 30 years of exposure.

These line drawings are atrocious, but this one appears to show the jackscrew is above the hold down bolt. My memory agrees. Someone will confirm.
