M41 - last quarter inch 120-130 1967

I'm putting the transmission back in my '67 220. It is hung up with a 1/4" gap between the gearbox and the bell housing. Since it is in that far the mainshaft must be started in the pilot bearing and the splines on the disk must be lined up.

Looking into the gap, it looks like the front seal retainer on the transmission isn't going into the hole in the back of the bellhousing. Are they a close fit or...? What do you think ?

My guess is that the Trani Shaft is trying to find the Pilot Bearing.
Keep lifting and wiggling the tail of the trani while putting forward pressure on the trani so it will slide in when it gets located.
On ALL manual tranis, I have this problem

I think Riverbend is on the right track thinking it has to do with the front seal housing on the transmission (the right distance is a big clue) and Planetman's suggestion to get the disc re-aligned might do it for you. You may want to pull the tranny back off and wire brush the opening in the bellhousing and the edge of the seal housing--maybe apply a little lube? -- Dave

hi heck- think you have the answer. when i have had this problem throwing a manual trans back in, cleaning the retainer edge with brush and a cloth solved it. regards oldduke

I pulled the clutch operating lever back with a 12" Crescent wrench, held it with a tie down strap, gave the output flange a spin and a shove and the transmission slide home.

I think my mistake was not spinning the clutch disk as I started tightening up the pressure plate. The top of the disk would lean back a little with just the pilot tool installed. The pressure plate then held it a little out of alignment when the bolts were tightened up. I'm not going to take the transmission out to test my theory.

It is a tight fit, but it sometimes helps to release some tension on the clutch disc in case the alignment is just right by moving the release arm enough to release the clutch which is not easily done with a pair of pliers or a prybar under the car.

You can use the clutch pedal if you have the slave bolted to the bellhousing.

Don't force it!
If there's any doubt, pull it out and start over.
Yes it's a close fit, but when everything is lined up properly, it will slide together easily.
