Power seat! 900

Hi guys,

My car is 1995 Volvo 960

I am trying to fix my passenger power seat. It does not move in any direction at all! I checked the wiring and they seem intact. There is power coming through to the connector under the seat. I looked thoroughly and there is nothing on the seat rail that might hinder the movement. I even tried to push the seat from back while someone trying to press the forward moving button, and nothing happened. There is no motor noise or whatsoever. I read online to diagnose through the OBD port B6 for the power seat, but I could not get any code, no LED flashing at all. I cannot unbolt the chair as it is positioned to back and obscuring the rear bolts!!

Any advice is appreciated ;)

    Hi guys!

I found the fix for the passenger power seat being not functioning. As you mentioned, its the relay JV1aPF-12V on the switch circuit. I jumped B and C as in the URL picture posted by another person here, and the seat was working again! I looked for the relay circuit and found that B and C are the on/off trigger in the relay.

Now does anybody knows where to order/find a new relay?

      Dear Ozzy Oz,

Hope you're well. Yes. I bought some from an outfit called Relay Specialties ( www.relayspec.com ). I do not know if this relay is still in the supply chain.

Having jumpered the failed relay out of the circuit, I've had no occasion to install a replacement relay.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

    Dear Ozzy Oz,

Hope you're well. Can you change the seatback's angle? Can you raise or lower the seat? I ask, because if none of the seat's powered functions work, then the likely cause is a failed seat switch. More specifically, there's a relay on the seat switch circuit board which - if it (the relay) fails - means that no power can reach any of the seat's motors. The relay is not available as a repair part.

You may be able to access the rear seat bolts using an offset box (ring) wrench. If the plastic track-end covers are in place, they may have to be sacrified. Removing the seat bolts will take time.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Thanks for the reply.

Indeed, no movement in any direction for the back support and the seat itself. I also was thinking the switch itself.

I think I have to find one in the junk yard.

Since you seem to have no power on any part of the seat, you might try unplugging it and see if you have any power at the plug. The plug on the passenger seat is located just beside the front seat bolt under the carpet. It can be pulled out from under the carpet without removing the carpet.

          Dear jimo,

Hope you're well. Ozzy Oz noted in the first post, "There is power coming through to the connector under the seat." This suggests the problem is more likely than not to be the switch.

          Hope this helps.

          Yours faithfully,

          Spook

Another thought. If power is getting to the switch and none of the functions work-it may not be getting power through the on off switch on the seat control.
I have in the past carefully taken the switches apart and cleaned the contacts and gotten the switches to work.

              Thanks Jimo,

I have checked the connector at to the passenger seat and it does have power. I am going to try clean the power seat switch and see if there is any visible damage or corrosion.

              Cheers

Unlike the driver's seat, the front passenger seat actually has an on/off button in addition to the directional buttons. Your mention of no motor noise leads me to believe that it may be in the off position. That may perhaps be the first place to check?

    Good luck!
