Trouble shooting '89 cruise control 200

Thanks again to Matt (TheBrickTank) for the file.

I am just now getting back to this cruise control problem.

I found a couple of hoses with split ends but otherwise it seems to be installed properly. The brake pedal switch does not appear to be leaking.

I currently have it on jack stands and can run the car up to road speeds (60mph). At that speed when I try to engage the cruise control the system pulls the accelerator pedal down and the speed runs up to 70mph before disengaging. So it appears the system is responding to some input but does not remain engaged.

Anyone have any ideas?

Randy

Testing the cruise control while the car is on jack stands is not a good test method. With no load on the drive wheels, the drive train will rapidly accelerate when the cc system applies throttle. The cruise control is designed to shut off when there is a surge in speed. The designers of the cruise control system wanted it to shut down if the car hit ice, and the rear wheels rapidly accelerated.

Test the cc system while driving.

Thank you, John.

Initially I got no response from the cruise control. Decided to put it on the jack stands and after clipping off a couple of split ends on the hoses and checking the brake component for proper sealing I started to get the response I described of engaging, surging and shutting down.

You were correct, of course, once the car was on the highway the cruise control works fine.

Randy,

Start here:

I have this one on my 89'.

I also have the newer style on my 90' and 91', and I just got done fixing my 90' as the brake pedal sensor was not set correctly.

If you have any questions on this, I'll try to answer them to the best of my knowledge.

Matt
