Rear wheel bearings and universal joints 700

Hi - I was wondering if anyone knew if the rear wheel bearings of 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Manual Transmission require a press for bearing replacement?

Also - the three universal joints and support bearing on the drive chain - is the a press required to replace these?

Thank you,

Dean

As with all 140, 160, 240, 260, 740, and 940 with the DANA rear you do need a press to remove the bearing -- that is unless you resort to extreme measures. You can grind a groove in the retaining ring, crack it with a chisel and it will slide off. Then you can proceed to break up the bearing and treat the inner race as you did the ring. A long pipe, a concrete floor and a large hammer could get the new pieces installed. A press makes the whole job more civilized. -- Dave

I meant to address your other question--regarding the driveshaft U-joints. A press can be handy--but awkward. A sturdy vice, a collection of sockets as distance-pieces/drivers, a nice hammer and an assistant (to support the far end) and you'll do OK. The driveshaft support can be worked off. -- Dave
