Disabling overdrive high pressure on M46 manual transmission 200 1985

I am having problems with the reverse slipping badly.
I read it could be caused by the J type overdrive (used on the manual tran. M46) not able to release its 450 psi pressure even when turned off.
So I removed the bottom cover and removed the three plugs.
Found broken oil filter, broken relef valve spring and multiple worned out oil seals.
My question is: If I am interested in getting the pressure to release and to see if I can get the reverse to work, how could I make the OD to not build up pressure at all i.e. To disable its function as an OD so it never interferes with the reverse operation. At least that's how I understand it.
Can I just keep the relief valve temporarily out of the system and put everything back together (with a good oil filter)?
I would do this mainly to test that I can get the reverse to work.
If I do not get it to work and I knew for sure that the pressure is at 21 psi, it would indicate the OD cone cluth lining is totally worn out or the four main springs that load the cone cluth aginst the output bell are no longer doing their job.
Hope this makes sense.
Thanks for your help.

I didn't see the following in your post. Is it not slipping in forward gears? Is the solenoid not releasing? Have you tried disconnecting the wire to it for a test? Bad seal on it?

      Thanks for the reply.
I did check the solenoid valve per the Volvo manual. I found it working fine outside of the OD but note: There was one external O-ring almost cut at one location. I think it is enough to make it leak and render the valve useless or at least very weak.
I wish I could get a pressure gage and line to hook up to the port they provide so I see what is actually happening when on the road.
      Regards
      Richard

I have a gauge with 3/8 pipe thread (male) that I purchased a few years ago. It measures 0-1000 psi in 20 lb increments. I bought it for diagnostic work on a Laycock overdrive on an 82 turbo car.

If you would be interested I would sell it for $10 + shipping. You can contact me at v*guy*240 at ya*ho*o dot * com. Remove all the spaces and *'s.

I don't monitor this account on a regular schedule, so please reply here if you send me an email.
