Tail Light Lenses 1800 1970

One of mine is serviceable, but cracked. I'd like to replace it. Number on it is L671. Two rounded protrusions on the surface, separated by a reflector with an interior aluminum insert.

I bought a replacement on eBay, but it was different. L843. Deeper, smooth surface and no reflector. I saw that number advertised, with both lens and tail light assembly, as being for a 1970-72 1800E. I have a pretty good recollection of my first 1800, a '72E which was close to being one of the last coupes made, as having the L671 lens.

Could someone school me on this? Are these two types of lenses interchangable? Is one better than the other, or more desirable?

Anyone got a decent L761 they'd like to sell? Or need a very good L843?

    Tail Light Lenses 1800 1970

    Hello Dave,

There were 3 different lenses used on all of the 1800 not including the 1800ES.

The early all red lenses with 2 mounds and a center reflector were used on all B18 P1800S and on the 1969 B20 1800S. In 1970 ALL USA and Canadian 1800E got all red lens, but the lens sticks out further requiring longer screws and the 2 mounds are gone. All other countries got the early style 2 mound lens, but the color was updated to have red and yellow sections.

Since the lenses have the same mounting base, the lenses are all interchangeable as long as you have long enough screws for the 1800E lenses.

      Tail Light Lenses 1800 1970

Thanks, Eric. I'm going to mount that newer lens, once I find the longer screws, and see how it works. I'm concerned that it has no internal divider to separate the tail/brake lights and turn signals, but maybe that's by design to make both appear larger.

I used to have a problems, in the ceramic fuse days, with the fuse for the brake light getting loose and the brake lights not working. Fortunately, the clock is on the same circuit and when it stopped I'd know. But i've upgraded to glass-tube-type fuses which ended the problem. Still, having replaced my clock innards with a battery/quartz movement, I've lost that indicator and, lacking the number-mounted reflectors (I have 'em, but never fitted them because of the difficulty they pose in washing the car), I liked the security of that middle reflector.

I swear my '72E had the older style, so when I'm done experimenting, I'll make my decision as to which way to go and report back. BTW, do you know if the tail light housing itself is different?
