Auto to Manual Swap 1993 240 Wagon - ¿ Differential Tone Wheel ? 200

I've been waiting patiently for my son to give back a 1993 240 5-speed Sedan so that I can swap the stick into a 1993 automatic wagon. It seems like that might never happen. So . . .

I have a 1990 240 stick Sedan donor. I was ready to use that car for the transplant until I got to checking the Bentley and found out that there are 3 different tone wheels for speed sensing used in the 240's. Of course, I would have liked to swap the 1990 rear axle without breaking it down because I learned long ago that changing a final drive ratio will affect drivability.

My questions:

1/Can I replace the tone wheel installed in the 1990 rear end with the one from the 1993 with no problems? I want to do this to maintain speedometer accuracy and proper anti-lock brake functionality.

2/ If the tone wheels are a one-for-one swap, will I be able to maintain the original setup of the differential?

Thanks to one and all.

Rich (near The Burgh)

Rich,

If both cares are not ABS, then you can swap without a problem.

The difference I believe between the sedan and wagon is all in the cluster. The speedometer is geared differently depending on whether it is a wagon vs. a sedan.

Other than those two things, you should be good to go.

I performed this swap on my maroon 89' back in 2013. The donor car was either a 91' or 92' non-abs rear end.

All is well in the world.

Good luck.

Matt

1. a non abs axle on an abs car will yield NO speedometer functionality.
2. in order to make the tone ring swap you need to dismantle the rear axle.

wouldn't it be easier to buy a used abs axle for a 5 speed.

on a side note i have a complete low mile 5 speed axle out of a 93 in my barn. if you live near central massachusetts you can have for small money.
