Look, I fixed it! 200 1990

So, I've been working on my latest addition to my fleet and here is what I just fixed, or shall I say the PO fixed.

PO's fix for a stripped out oil bolt

I do remember seeing this when inspecting the car, but it did not dawn on me what was going on until last weekend when I went to drain the oil before doing some major engine freshening.

Here is what the pan and fix looked like once out of the car.

Pan out showing oil plug fix

The next two photo's just show how badly stripped the bolt hole was. I still have it and plan to fix it for future use. Will need a bigger bolt.

stripped 2

These are images of the new to me pan that I pulled on Tuesday from my local PNP off of a 91' sedan. The pan is a little dented, but hey it does not leak and the drain plug is not stripped. Score for me!

Hope you all enjoyed the show. A lot more fun posting it than fixing/living it.

Matt

    hi matt,
just my thought and how i think, best to put a pan with a proper bolt. not good to change the way volvo has made it, especially for this critical engine part.

good short term fix, but i would recommend 1) replace 2) retap.

but, these 240s can take almost any kind of mods or fixes as shown from all on this board.

in fact, since parts are getting harder to find and no longer manufactured, we'll all resort to these fixes down the road, i'm sure. but look what the cubans have done to maintain all those vintage cars, amazing.

    Hi,

Give the original pan a lye soak, then clean it with a wire wheel. Welding a nut onto the bung should then give good adhesion.

I actually like the PO 'fix'. I bet it was a bit messy draining the oil. I wonder if a good heliarc application could repair the stripped threads?

Pretty good show. Isn't it a mighty challenge getting an oil pan off a 240?

      Yes and no.

The first one I ever did was. I've learned a lot since then and now I can remove one in about an hour, and the expletives are very few.

I might remove more than what is really needed, but I don't want to wrestle the car, I just want to fix it so I can drive it.

As I've gotten older, my motto has clearly become both at work and at home, "Work smarter, not harder", and oh by the way, take your time. You'll thank your self later.

      Matt
