Hi all,
Hope everyone's 240 are running well.
Is rust in tank a really bad thing.
Car sat for over 3 years.
Gas smells spoiled.
Pulled main pump, pump does not run.
Pulled in tank pump, pump does not run.
In tank sending unit coated in sand consultancy "rust".
Gas stinks and the little small amount in tank is Brown when stirred.

Some rust in tank.
Is it still ok for now?

I have repair sending unit.

My advise would be do not buy a replacement tank, the aftermarket tanks are total garbage. They are made of thinner gauge metal, and of poor quality. I would suggest you google "Gas Tank RENU", see if someone in your area does it. It is a clean and seal process. I had it done by a local radiator shop many years ago. That was after I brought the aftermarket crap, and couldn't bring myself to put it in the car. It still sits in a box in the corner of my garage.

if you have a rusty interior to your gas tank throw it out and buy a new for 120-160 dollars.

don't waste your time fixing, fiddling or any other cheap charlie way to extend what is unarguably already a lost cause.

    ooops 99 dollars shipped free

    Hi,

The next choice would be to use an epoxy coating mixture sold for this purpose and for sealing the seams of old and new VW Beetle early 70's tanks.
I have never used such a product so I can not recommend a brand.

My Danish buddy and I shared a $40 gallon of POR-15 - he fixed a TR3 gas tank and I did an Alfa Spider tank. I rattled a chain in the tank and pounded it with a rubber mallet to get the loose stuff out. The POR-15 did a great job of sealing off the remaining surface rust. When I bought the Alfa the PO was using a plastic boat tank in the trunk (only my Bugeye Sprite took less gas to fill). -- Dave

    update..

I dropped the tank and poured out the brown gas and rust particles.

I rinsed the tank out using the lawn hose, and rust particles did
come out. There is some rust residue in the tank...
Can the tank still be used?

I'm in New Mexico and so rust is not the norm.

    Thanks,
    Joseph

If possible try to find a good used one, one from a running car. You can try to remove more of the rust and neutralize it by pouring in some white vinegar mixed with water, maybe 50/50. Drop a chain in there to help stir things up. You may want to attach a rope to the chain to help fish it out. Replace the sender and both pumps.Flush all the fuel lines. Any small spec of rust will clog your injectors.

        Nel621,
I was just looking at youtube videos on the cleaning process.
None of the videos seem to result in what I consider rust free.

I went to the pull and pay today. All of the 240 models were
being held up off the ground using old wheels and all four were
held up by the fuel tank. I could not pull the tank without the
        car falling down.

For $100 bucks I think I will just order a new tank.

        Thanks,
        Joseph Segura

Agreed, that is the best solution. Too much work and potential risk to your fuel system's health. Is it a New Mexico car? Sounds like it came from somewhere else...

Replaced with tank from pull & pay.

Car is from CA., but sat/parked in NM for eight years. Tank had very low gas and rust was born. If tank had been full and stabilizer used it would have been ok for years. Rust is rare in NM.

Jwalker - it is a CA. car..but I let it sit for years with little fuel in the tank. Now I know better.
Now o know to fill the tank, add stabilizer, run for five minutes before storing any car. Or just remove all the fuel.
