Strange electrical happening 200

1991 240 with stock radio, last week #1 fuse blew shutting off radio. Replaced #1 fuse and radio worked fine while sitting in driveway. Drove car for about 3 minutes, blew the horn on the way past son's houses, radio went dead because #1 fuse blew again. Checked fuse holder, cleaned, replaced fuse and checked wiring connectors at back of radio and re-racked radio. Worked fine sitting in driveway, three minute of driving got a "bulb failure warning light". Just as I have done for the last 20 years I tapped the brake pedal to clear the "bulb fail" light. The light "bulb fail light" went out and so did the radio because fuse #1 blew. Any thoughts on this strange electrical happening??

Hi Folks,
I has similar issue last month.
Repeatedly burning out fuse...can't remember which one is was.

Turned out to be the light under the bonnet. The light unit was
removed for cleaning and bulb replacement. And while removed
when I drove the car the wiring would touch the ground (bonnet) and
blow the fuse.

You know why they call New Mexico New Mexico?
Because it is the New Mexico.

Check the wires going to the door speakers. I was having similar problems a couple years ago - radio would inexplicably decide that I wasn't cool enough to listen to music. I don't remember if the fuse blew, but the radio would definitely conk out. Went poking around and discovered that the insulation on the speaker wires in my left rear door was frayed and that they were intermittently shorting against the frame. Not hard to check - just a couple of screws and the door panel lifts right off.

Looks like the #1 fuse also goes to the cigarette lighter and the rear wiper/washer (if you have a wagon-shaped brick) - might want to check those wires for fraying too.

Good luck!

Yes, ye old brick may be an acquired taste...but it's one I acquired very quickly. ;D

Dennis,

After a glance at the wiring diagram to your year car, AND if you have a wagon, I too agree with Nick that you should check your wiring harnesses in the rear hatch as several of them run to fuse #1.

just my 2 cents.

Matt

Thanks for the suggestions,I think I'll start with the rear hatch.
