"HATEFUL' Heater Core replacement SAGA continues... 200 1989

Sages,

So in August 2015, I replaced the fan. Fan almost immediately failed, but in the meantime I developed a sweet smell coming out of the vents. Yea for me!

So in March of 2016 I replaced the heater core, which was leaking, the fan, and the A/C evaporator that I broke taking it out a second time as I installed the heater core in backwards the first time. Way to go ACE!

Well it seems that I now have a A/C condensation leak coming from between the two halves that join together to enclose the heater core!

In my haste to put the car back together I neglected to seal the the seam with something. Whatever is supposed to go in between that crack, I did not return nor replace, and I now have a leak that I can not get rid of, UGH!

So for those willing and brave enough to take this task on themselves, please, please, remember to seal the damn crack or you too will be headed back into the depths of hell!

Matt

I hate going in its the worst job on these cars, i really feel for you is the rubber drain pipe clear, maybe you could smear some sealer on the outside or take out the drain pipe and try and spray some type of liquid sealer up the inside, you would only need to seal the bottom section. Or get use to no a/c.

The hardest part on the older models like my '84 was having to grind down the plastic "pods" to a flat surface so the newer style motors with flat mounting plates would work. Now that was fun!

hi sages- how would getting a 940 solve this problem. heard the A+ number one worst job on 240s remains blower motor replacement. also heard the 740 has a better design and motor replacement only takes 1 hour. does sound like the heater core and evaporator are equally hellacious. as was said in the mekong delta give em hell. thanks tons oldduke

The bad news is my AC hasn't worked for a few decades....and thus the good news is my blower motor was rarely used and still blows strong on all 4 speeds.

I believe Volvo426 was referring to the 740/940 models regarding the fan. -- Dave

No i have done the blower motor on a 79 & 93 240. Right hand drive models, You don't need to take the whole a/c heater unit out. Just take the ducks off both sides un clip the sides of the blower unit, take the clip off each fan and pull them out don't mix them up, you don't wont to put them back in and have the fan blow backwards, undo the wiring and then i think its three screws holding the fan in and slide it out. Sore back and sore fingers are part of the job.

The hose is clear. It was kinked, but I fixed that and yesterday I tried duct tape to no avail.

I hate this job SO MUCH!

Duct tape is not water proof. You could try a poly sealant, just squeeze it in with your finger, but the area has to be dry. And, no AC until the sealant is dry.

The 240 has a heater core in the same position that the 850 has the AC evaporator. Yuck!

UPDATE: 'HATEFUL' Heater Core replacement SAGA continues... 200 1989

Well this is what the most hateful job EVER looks like. Heater core section is just about to come out. I started this morning at 8 am, and had it by 10 am

This is what the back of my wagon looks like. All the parts minus the dashboard.

That is sitting on the roof of my van which is parked in my garage.

Here is a shot of the evaporator all by itself. I took my time and did not have an issue getting it out. The foam covering around it though was just soaked.

Here is the center section all back together and clamped while the RTV dries. Tomorrow my son and I will put the car back together. This will give the RTV at least 24 hours to cure and become a nice solid seal!

Here is looking in where the evaporator will eventually sit. The RTV set up quite nicely!
