1992 Volvo 240 Temperature Gauge Inoperative

I'm slowly going through a 1992 240 that has sat for about 3 years. It has 262,227 miles on it. I noted that after engine warm up, the temp gauge was still at full cold. I removed the temperature compensator board and jumped pins 1 and 3. Reassembled the cluster and still no gauge action, even when grounding the sensor wire (fuel gauge working fine). Does anyone know what the internal resistance of the temp gauge should be? I am seeing an open circuit (infinite resistance) across the terminal posts of the gauge, which probably means I need a new one, but I don't know what the resisitance should be.

I did verify that I have continuity through the board bypass. Thanks for any ideas.

Dave Milo

    Hi Dave,

Your gauge is open as you guessed. It should read around 50 ohms but you can compare the fuel gauge, it is the same electrically.

That's really fine nichrome wire in there, but it probably fell off the terminal post, like this one.

      1992 Volvo 240 Temperature Gauge Inoperative 200 1992

Hi Folks, I received a new temperature gauge and installed it. It finally got to about 08:42 o'clock and did it slowly. I shot the thermostat housing with an IR gun and got a 175 F degree reading, so I'm planning on a new thermostat.

Thanks everyone, I hope this post helps someone in the future.

Using your multimeter, you should encounter come manner of resistance at pin #2 of round connector #31 on the Volvo 240 1992.pdf page 23 of 23 as found in:

    http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com/

Negative DC probe set to resistance or continuity using black negative meter probe at pin one while positive red probe contacts positive DC volts as battery voltage, safely.

If open, fault at the wire harness in between or at the sensor. On my 1990 240 DL Wagon, occasionally I have to wiggle the wire term secured to the temp gauge sensor under the #2 air intake port runner tube.

Yet the post on the instrument cluster, or some other point, could have a break. Though grounding the sensor proves no fault at the instrument cluster for the temp gauge.

I believe the sensor wire is collected into the wire harness sheath, through the bulkhead firewall plate sealing grommet, and under the dash.

(Not through the occasionally troublesome large grey block connector, at the center top of bulkhead direwall, clipped to the top seam or lip, the D+ from the instrument cluster head travels through to get to the alternator.)

Hope that helps. I'm unsure my description here.
