hi kit- good to hear from you. planning to roll the 240 a lot more at least until it gets hot as hades here. was overjoyed to find nothing has changed. at my first stop light yesterday on thunder road some schmegeggie mouthed an obscenity at me and issued a foul hand gesture just because the wagon made a slow takeoff from the light. wonder what our late compadre irv g would have done. that 66 volvo sports car was hotter than mine and pumped a lot more mileage. so what have you been doing while duke was off the board? regards oldduke

Hiya Uncle Old Duke!!!!
Sure Happy it's Wednesday all day long!
A belated Happy Holidays to you! Best hopes for some adult beverage making of an eggnog nature during the holidays. Or we can have some of the ripples, please?
Lots of schmegeggies on Thunder Road. Those rotten no-good-nicks!
I'd guess that folks with class like you, and Art, and everyone would ignore them (I'll exclude meself from that list as I'm very classless), see their tail lights shrinking in the distance yet not wish them ill, maybe give them a middle-finger salute out of respect (HA!), and hope a gendarme gets'em for excessive acceleration or speeding and reckless driving.
All factory stock and well tuned 240 is more than fast enough for me. Though the 1970s K-Jetronic 240 models could be trying at times like going uphill.
I had a job, and that ended 31DEC2018. So, after a month break of no job, good earl grey tea and some rather typically bland St. Louis area craft beer, have some interviews for writer jobs. Trying for remote jobs.
No ripple, or wine, or a gal-pal, yet.
The gerrymandered exhaust on my 1990 240 DL (li'l red Wagon is sort of whacko. So, I'm trying different hangers, the heavy duty strap kind made from old tires, so the exhaust pipe does not contact the drive shaft center support bracket. Yet these auto parts store like AutoZone and O'Reilly's are sort of useless sometimes. Though the AutoZone rear brake rotors (made in China Brembo rotors, I guess) and AutoZone brake pads, not metallic, also Brembo, do okay.
The fleas have returned with a vengeance in this rotten gulag dump 17 miles SW of the St. Louis arches thing. So, at 4x the max concentration, spray, spray, spray the carpet. Insect Growth Hormone stuff in the bed clothes. Finally killing them. The slumlord cares not. Two years ago I got an awful skin infection no insurance yet went to the clinic for antimicrobial antibiotics.
Else, that's about it. Persuading RWD Volvo facebook users to come here and get good guidance. The RWD Volvo forums for 200-700-900 are echo chamber that are not so useful to the owner with the problem. All I can do since 2011 to bring them here to the brickboard.
Gotta a new toolbox, yet have to put the tools away. Some other good made in USA toolboxes for the Volvo tools and such in a nylon bag that is rather worn.
So, I'm living the dream. You can buy frozen St. Louis style pizza in the local grocery stores. In the last two months I may have gotten 15-20 and add onions, garlic, olives, and anchovies. The Dog Town Pizza is I guess my fave? Though you can get Stefanina's Pizza (my fave store, cheaper and way better than Imo's) as a take and bake now. Sort of getting fat-ter. Ha! I'll lose it when I get working again and walk more.
That's about my boring it.
Hhhhhhwut about you? You been on Thunder Road with the schmegeggies.
Been between Tobacco Road and Stinking Creek? Fresh red snapper and flounder every day as you like?
Please let us know. Grateful you are okay and in the pink and right as rain.
Sure Happy it's Wednesday (all day long)!!!!!

hi kit - good to hear details of your recent exploits. been busy as hell with car work . actually 240 has had no problem . most of work was with Saturn, hit 180k. about to start a front strut replacement on it . haven't done that exact job before , so sure it will be an adventure like life in the Mekong delta. that black cat eyeing the bottle of blatz looks like a killer- am I right? looking forward to online time with those like you who know more about 240s than me. remember rumors of olddukes demise were greatly exaggerated. thanks tons oldduke

Hiya Uncle Old Duke,
Happy Rooby Toozday with some period apt Rolling Stones on the Mekong Delta. Just want to paint it black. Or maybe a new clear coat for the 240s three. Or maybe correct color urethane.
Black mold and mildew sure love the rustoleum paint on the 1990 lil red wagon.
Removing the LOL Cat dandruff after a recent February 2019 dandruff fall in St. Loogey, the miserable. See the other two 240s in the background. What a dump.

Better with Idaho, Montana, Washington, maybe Nevada or Oregon State Plates there. Useful winters with snow. Likes the snow. No fun St. Louis is awful.
Oh, not my kitteh. A link to image of a kitteh and the blatz. The apartment amenity list did not mention unending fleas. Three years of this. Deltamethrin pesticide at 4x the max concentration seems to work with that insect growth hormone suppressant.
Please forgive me for starting the very incorrect rumor. My fault entirely. I did not research the fact entirely. Your middle initial is different.
Why you need an Arty B., John Seargeant, Phil Machine Man, Spook, Amarin, Pageda where r YOU???) Dan, and others to provide correction.
Though I cajole, persuade, and exhort the misinformed RWD Volvo owner on the facebook group pages to come here to the brickboard for the FAQ, the RWD forum (I mention the mighty and powerful Arty B. and cleanflametrap to bring them there and here as Arty B. correctly does not facebook). Facebook is an exercise in nihilist narcissism echo chamber.
Your middle initial is "E" (I guess?) while what I thought was you has the middle initial of "G" (Greg) and resided in Port St. Lucie, FL near you. Mr. Starkie also posted on the obit. My usually exhaustive research was not so exhaustive. I was rather upset when encountering the information. I could not find a phone number for you.
Hope that helps.
Off to use over the road mudflap pieces to rehang the exhaust on the imaged li'l red 1990 240 you see imaged here.
Please forgive me.
Buttermilk-Free Boyeee.
Just say NO to Sodium triphosphate (STP), also sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) in your food. Usually in cheapo seafood like the jumbo shrimp I got at Walmart. Bad for you. Thawing in cold water gets rid of it, yet makes for flavorless shrimp as the TPP gets sort of rinsed away. Had a migraine-level event yester-eve. Yet not a migraine as I know migraines.

hi , hello and how the hell are you all- reports of my untimely demise and your kind words warmed my soul. haven't been on the board in a while fixing this that and everything else. what a coincidence . just today I fired up the 240 from its long sleep and drove it all around. plan to get back on the board as a regular again. hope you are all doing well, kitty g, arty b, cb , pageda and many others. appreciate your concerns and sage advice. time to get back I the war. thanks tons oldduke

really do appreciate your kind words kit. volvo running well . frankly kit , starting to surmise your cats are spoiled rotten. only issue with the 240 is the leaking problem when it rains . leak comes through the plastic molding on the inside of the rf rocker panel and eventually soaks the front passenger rug. unable to find the source so far. keep in touch . oldduke

Hiya Uncle Old Duke!
I guess you park your 1992 Volvo 240 Wagon outdoors, then?
I guess okay to continue the discussion here, yet better for the board in a new thread? It's fine as-is.
Water intrudes from the right (as you sit inside, facing forward) rocker panel space.
Or do you mean the plastic strip at the bottom 2-3 inches on each door? Secured by clips in holes about center line of that grey trim strip on the door.
There is a metal trim that secures to the top edge of the rocker panel both side secured by clips.
Or do you mean the opaque plastic plugs you find when you remove the trim around the door edge on the body side, lift up the carpet, and find these mounted vertically so you can remove them and clean out and inspect, and I guess, apply rust proofing like Waxoyl in the blind compartments like the rocker panel interior?
Like the bottom of the door, the bottom of the rocker panel has drain holes. The rocker panel drain holes can get clogged if enough biomatter detritus intrudes through the cowl vent at the bottom front of the windshield.
You also have the door interior drains. These can get clogged also. If the exterior window scrapers are original, they shrink forming gaps at the ends and forming a gap against the window. In cold climes, the freezing action opens the bottom of the door or rocker panel pinch weld so the waxy sealant loses seal, and then the paint, so you see rust in RWD Volvo. Unless the owner maintains rust proofing sealant.
You've resolved not a leak around the windshield gasket material. Original factory or early replacement RWD Windshield used the butyl rubber tape. Maybe mid- or late 1990s began the awful urethane windshield sealant. My 1992 sedan has a replaced windshield with urethane atop and butyl rubber remains from the factory underneath. I have met maybe one windshield replacement technician that was competent or at least some manner described as honest.
Another point of intrusion is the plug in the lowest portion of the floor pan. You can see these under the car and should be well-coated with under-body sealant rustproofing. Yet I've seen RWD floor pans bent or dented or otherwise distorted as some silly person used the floor pan to lift or stand the raised body. A huge no-no when working with unibody. No frame rails, merely unibody strengthening tubes that parallel the transmission / drive shaft tunnel and the tube perpendicular to the transmission drive shaft tunnel.
So water intrudes when your 1992 240 Wagon sits for months not operated? Or when you drive in rainy wet weather?
Folks use these under unibody box tubes to lift or support 240. No no.

Did not use the jack point correctly. Did not circle that.
Please lettuce know.
Sure Happy it's Tuesday (all day long).
Earl Grey Tea with hunny and milk does not lead to complete wakefulness, Boyeeee.

hi cb and other Volvo sages- surmsise youre concerned about the current cane, Irma pummeling the east coast of fla and my burg of Jensen beach. east coast is getting continuous heavy rain. worried my 92 240 would float away but so far so good. tobacco road is even flooded. the oldduke is alive and well. put up shutters. stockpiled food, gas for generator as I await a sunny and dry day. thanks for your concern. even olddukes enemies emailed and worried about his demise. may have dodged the bullet this time. thanks tons oldduke

hi cb - thanks for checking in and the best wishes. all ok here until the next cane. only negative is the 92 245 has a windshield leak which during heavy rains deposits a 1/2 inch of water on the front passenger floor. leak comes to the right front plastic kick panel at its bottom. not sure of the origin but suspect it comes from the windshield. more than one shyster has told me basically disassembling the car to find and fix it is needed at a clip that would cause terminal sticker shock in most. even a diagnosis would cost plenty. may ask safelite about it. thanks tons oldduke

This leak appears to be a serious trouble with all 240s. The pan in the cowl dumps squarely on the wiper grommet, and it is the outer dimension of the grommet (where it fits the sheet metal) which leaks. Can invade the ignition computer.
After verifying on three cars this grommet is loose, I questioned whether it was always that loose or it has shrunk or relaxed somehow. Fixed by adding an oring to the groove (inspected after each two-inch downpour). Then I bought some replacement grommets from the Volvo dealer (Tasca) only to find they are of a different design. Haven't yet tried a replacement grommet to see how it fits, because the oring hack is holding water.
Naturally, I have much more documentation on this, and I'll offer it in a thread with this topic when it pops up.

hi arty b- good to hear from you. the oldduke is back in the war , actually never left. looked at that leaking grommet. do you have to take out the glove compartment to view from that perspective? would a thick grommet with thick silicon plastigoop do the trick? thanks tons oldduke

hey duke.
would suspect Rust...but what would cause that were you are? Sea spray?
Do the Hose test as detailed below. That right-side kick panel is where the Computer is located. So at the very least, until you sus it out, take a look to see if it's getting wet...and if it is wrap it in plastic.
If it is coming from the windshield - as I had a leak once there, you should be able to see it above the dash. Take off the kick panel, take up the carpet off the rocker panels, remove the glove box interior...just a few screws slides out easy in and out. Hit the windshield with a hose.
Long shot: the rocker panel drains are clogged (they are below along the seam...small rectangular slots 4 or 5 running from the front to the rear) Along with one of the plastic plugs on the interior side of the rocker panel MAY let in water that drains down from the front cowling.....

Hey Old Duke. I had the same problem with my 84/ 245. As it turns out there a foam plug where the window shield wiped motor goes through the body. Right at the end of the upper drain pan that divert the rain water out. I don't know how much a 1992 /245 has changed , but follow the wiper motor where the motor drive shaft is. that where the foam plug is. Gain access to the wiper motor area and run a water hose on the roof and let it flow down over the car and see. If you think it's the windshield itself, I did my leaking 89/745. By removing the trim and running some flowable silicon along the top of the glass. Pretty ru.nny stuff. If you do find that the foam plug has broken down, use some sealant other than silicon. These Volvo bodies are galvanized and silicon will react to the metal and will rust it out really fast. Learn about this when repairing a new galvanized metal roof that has around six months. Roofer used silicon on the step flashing and it rusted out.
