Transmission 700 1985

Doing 70mph, with no warning, my transmission in 85 740 disengaged. No fluid leakage, no previous slippage and the fluid was clean and not burnt. Anyone know what likely happened ?

    ... 'cause I dunno. Other than a torque converter or valve body failure or other causes? Sort of doubt shift linkage or kick-down cable adjustment.

    Spook? Trichard?

      Replace the transmission screen. It 's clogged.My 745 transmission was so dirty, when I did a flush the new detergent in the oil change loosen internal funk. Had to clean the transmission screen several time already due to some much cleaning action in a non-partisan maintained car. Two oi! Changes with the cheap stuff and then I use Mobile 1.

    Hi Soundchaser,

    1985 Volvo 740? Turbo or no? How many miles? Where do you reside? By state, province, prefecture, or region?

    As it has been nearly two days since your post, any other symptoms you can report?

    Have you had issues with the shift lever as you change between gear while at idle? (Shift lever adjustment.)

    Any issues with over drive engagement / disengagement?

    Any problems with the kick-down feature or cable. (Down shift cable adjust, bushings, though probably not a cause for failure, yet may be.)

    How are the two engine mounts / transmission mount?

    Before those much more learned on the AW-7x transmission than me respond, as I'm all Volvo RWD manual transmission, condemn your automatic transmission, please reply.

    So, when was the last fluid flush / replace? What fluid did you use? Many here report an intermediate step of flush with reasonable quality mineral Dexron, and than after some weeks or months, using a quality synthetic such as Mobile 1. I'd advocate synthetic lubes in all and everything. Though white lithium is good on all door, hood, trunk hinges and latches, though.

    So, bump.
