make your life easy

1. buy a new intake manifold gasket for a few dollars
2. remove the amm accordion hose at the intake manifold and the 12mm bolt which secures the idle air control bracket to the manifold
3. remove all 8 intake manifold nuts
4. pull the intank manifold with everything else connected towards the drivers strut tower and tie it off using the hood hinge
5. lo and behold unobstructed is the oil separator

thank you, I will give this a try. There is a bundle of stiff wires that run over the top of the oil separator. Do I need to loosen these wires as well?

do as i suggested and it will become self evident as you pul the manifold towards to the drivers and off the 8 studs

the stiff wires are a part of the fuel injection harness and will likely be attached to the separator near the top of the separator by a screw through a harness bracket

THANK YOU!!!! The separator is now out. I bought my Volvo new in 1989 and now has over 500,000 miles. By the looks of the separator, it has not be changed for 300,00 or more miles. I have never had to take the engine apart other than water pumps, and one alternator. But it is now leaking oil out the valve cover gasket and possible the seals. I am fully retired now and am going to slowly replace worn out parts.

Thanks again for the help.

Are you planning on cleaning the old one or getting a new one? Most people report the aftermarket replacements do not last long before breaking along the seam.

The originals are very robust. I have had good luck cleaning them. I ream the top opening with a 3/8" drill bit. I then use a small hammer to tap the sides and knock the build up loose. After not being able to knock any more loose by striking the sides I soak it in gasoline for a period of time.
