1998 V90 transmission fluid to choose: Mobil 1 Synthetic 3309 VS AISIN non-synthetic ( Type-IV, JWS 3309) S90-V90

When i got this car - it just turn 100000 miles - and doing some research decided to put Mobil 1 Synthetic 3309. Since then worked as need to be, no problem, For now, soon mileage will turn 180000 and color of ATF not as fresh anymore - still no burn odor or other bad signs. Maybe not looking for extra " happiness " in life and simply replace it with fresh Mobil 1 Synthetic..... or maybe to try AISIN as OEM ATF ( but AISIN is not synthetic ... ) Just thinking...

Walmart Supertech meets the factory specs. I used to use the Valvoline synthetic, but this is a much better value. Most of the synthetic blending stocks come out of Exxon Mobil's Baytown refinery. I flush my transmission every 30,000 miles.

The original Volvo ATF spec for this transmission was Dexron III. That standard has been superseded for many years now by later versions. Those later formulations are compatible with the older stuff, and have significant improvements. (better temperature stability, anti-foaming, improved oxidation resistance are a few) The latest seems to be Dexron VI - this is what I used in my S90. Mobil-1 ATF that meets Dexron specs is another good choice...but the Dexron VI is usually much less costly.

The 3309 ATF is usually specified for Aisin's more modern FWD transaxles...I don't know much about it, but it is not the type called for in your owner's manual.

UPDATE: SEEMS Torque Converter went off. 1998 V90 transmission fluid to choose: Mobil 1 Synthetic 3309 VS AISIN non-synthetic ( Type-IV, JWS 3309) S90-V90

Good day, eve, morning ... to all of Volvo owners. Some time passed-by since last discussion and " me " jumping between option what to choose as monkey between two bananas...;O)
Even come across a document from AISIN stated which ATF oils is interchangeable with AISIN JWS 3309 ( http://www.aisinaftermarket.com/uploads/ho09dncp_ATF_nov_2016_OEInterchange.pdf ) Not sure if i mention before that about 6 mo. ago car began make some " zooming " noise somewhere under tranny/engine border area, at first almost come and go, then more loudly - and after car reaches working temp it will dissapeared. Tranny work as nothing going on - no leak, no codes, ATF level is good, color is acceptable and no burnt odor... One day back in July, when day temp got over 100 i was driving and suddenly got CEL and blinking transmission light all over as Christmass tree... but car still driving normally and gear changed as usual, coolant temp show normal temp level... I immediately slowed down and next day make ATF change. Checked what CEL code i have - " Generic " P0740 : Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit - So, at first i changed ATF with Supertech DextronIII/Mercon and drive for couple a week. Old ATF come clear,a little dark - no deposits at all . I have been read somewhere that quality and level for this particular AISIN transmission critical and can make weird noise. Noise from undercarriage disappeared for a week with a fresh fluid ... then slowly back - car still driving as should and no more any CEL or transmission code. Then i decided to do ATF change one more time " just in case " - this time i put Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage. Again, noise went of for week or so - then back again .... AND THEN IT HAPPENED: Last Friday morning on the way home from work i stopped at the stop sign - when green come, released brake and pressed accelerator pedal ... Car began movement very slowly with some jerking and shaking - and, of course, immediately i got CEL and all transmission lights began blinking ... What a nightmare i have those morning - supposedly 20 min drive take almost an hour... Got home, tired and so-o depressed after graveyard shift and plus car ... - went to take nap... Today checked for CEL code - sure, again P0740... Now i have to make decision : go for Volvo original torque converter ( don't ask for price ... ) or for some aftermarket one... Car has over 182000 on clock, passed emission back in march - and as all older engines - when started cold produces some " sounds " that will gone after warmed up... And - what shop to choose: Volvo shop or transmission repair that know how to replace torque converter. My location in Lakewood, CO - near Kipling & Colfax - know some Volvo shops around ( have been before at Volvo Specialist Lakewood Import - with owner by name Archie, first car 850 GLT once repaired here ) and another not too far is Anderson Foreign Car Service, never have chance to be there. . Need advise to what to do ...head simply refuse to do any decision making job ... sure, though on financial question pretty much , can borrow some amount from friends . Will check tomorrow during day for any suggestions & advises - badly need transportation for work, and, sadly , have zero relations with John Davison Rockefeller. Thank you everyone for help.

Older cars LOVE the Valvoline High Mileage trans oil in the red bottle.

I used it on the 850's and 960 and the LOVE it.

I guess you've read through the AW30-40 series 700-900 FAQ entry?

    Transmission: Automatic AW 30-40

    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAutoAW30.htm

The FAQ entry mentions Mobile 1 FAQ Dexron synthetic. I guess Dexron III(?) for your AW-40?

Though verify with the owner manual or dealership.

Volvo also provides a full synthetic ATF also. Check with the stealerhship?

Other can provide better info, I'm sure.

    Hope that halps.
