93 240 transmission not shifting when cold 200

Ok. I have to admit. I did it. I did transmission service on my 200K tranny. Thought it would make it smoother.

Drained, changed filter/gasket and filled, then flushed old fluid via cooler.
Filled with Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF.

Now the tranny does not shift from 1st when cold. Warmed up and rides nice.
Level is good.

I am thinking the valve is sticking. I checked the kickdown cable and it is free and clear of issues.

What gives?

Fwiw a few of the smarter and more capable gents on the bb have recommended autorx for sludge removal. Might want to give it a shot.

Yes, good recommendation. AutoRx can be used on transmissions and other automotive parts as well as engines. Did a nice job on my 850’s engine. You might want to check out their website, auto-rx.com. IMHO - you have nothing to lose trying it (other than a few bucks...:) Maybe you will get lucky!

    Update.

Added Lucas Tranny fix. No improvement. Still slight vibration on start too in 1st gear. FYI. I have new mounts all around, so there should be no such vibrations coming through.

Flushed fluid again with ScanTech Dextron III even though I noticed new black sludge on the magnets. Just for giggles since I have money to burn. lol. Flushed fluid is not "new" clear.

Stuck in 1st gear for good now. Assume that the clutch disk is definitely gone and is swimming in the 2x flushed fluid. BTW. Kickdown cable is in very nice condition and moves freely, so it is not that issue.

Word to the wise, never flush fluid without knowing tranny maintenance history or checking out condition of existing fluid. I neglected to heed that warning this time while thinking it would be a different outcome.

    Looking for another tranny.

I've had a similar problem. Replaced screen filter which was almost blocked making the pump "scream". Flushed twice, once with Transmax, second with high mileage Castrol. It's been getting better. Early AW70 and Toyota equivalent were repaired with a new "upper valve body" which had a new valve that released the built-up air in the pump area. See repair manuals. I suspected the Governor "screen" may be almost plugged. I believe this all was a result of accidentally stalling the Engine by putting in Reverse while going forward about 20MPH. And many say the solution is a "good" used transmission as you are contemplating.
I am considering a Derale type of thermostatic valve that bypasses the cooler in the radiator until the fluid is up to operating temperature. Many BMW, Mercedes, and VW use similar solutions to quicken the transmission fluid temperature rise.

      Good luck.

I am not a guru when it comes to the 'older' 4 speed auto boxes, but it sounds like you dislodged some serious dirt and it plugged up a solenoid or two. I don't think it is the clutch disk, just sludge.

Call an honest tranny shop, if there is such a thing, and ask them if there is an inexpensive way to clean it out.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

I am planning on picking up a good used tranny and swapping.

Also planning on taking the old one apart and taking a closer look at clutch disks and valve body. Should be fun.

When you flushed the transmission through the cooler line, did you run the gear selector through all the gears and back?

If not, you should have as that oil in there may not have gotten flushed out.

    Just my 2 cents.

If this is the first time you put synthetic fluid it, at 200K, I'm not sure if that was a good move or not. Other than the cost of the fluid, another flush with a Dexron based fluid might be an interesting thing to try.

Are you checking the level with the engine warm, running, in neutral?

I am adding a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix now to thicken it up.

Fluid level is normal to top line 90deg mark when warm in park or neutral.

You are probably right about the Dextron. New fluid is nice, but it may be too nice.

I did call Valvoline (Sanity check) and they confirmed that I am using the right fluid.
