Mixing synthetic with glycol based brake fluids 200 1983

This was accidental and I hope it doesnt entail a worst case scenario. My '83 245 was on jackstands while I replaced a front brake caliper, so I asked a friend to pick up some Dot 4 fluid for me. I filled the master cylinder and began the process on one wheel before I noticed the word "synthetic" in smaller type on the bottles. I immediately stopped. What am I facing? Is this okay or not? Thanks, Jim

Not that Michael needs a second, but I agree; DOT 5 is the one you don't want to mix, not because it is synthetic but because it is silicone. If the synthetic DOT 4 was inappropriate there would be strong warnings on the product.

Could be "synthetic" is just a marketing touch here; glycol isn't exactly mined. It's gluten free as well!

well if you had a 65 544 like my first drive in HS,it wouldnt matter cause by the end of the day it would be flushed out onto the pavement after having use the brakes instead of downshifting,,,this was in 1973 before the internet much less brickboard,,& before I the idea of fixing things when they needed it..

Oldduke, I had a grandfather who was part of the effort to jam the axis radar for D-Day.

By the way, you're right about junkyard parts for the visor clips. Every yard-procured clip I ever used needed replacement again with a Volvo-procured clip. The UV gets to them, and the oh-**** grab handle covers up high in the car.

Something else destroys the washer bottle caps and eventually the bottles too, as I guess my old friend always says "polymers return to monomers" but that doesn't make it any easier.

As long as the label on the bottle says its compatible with DOT 4, then you're okay.

I must relate an experience I had with Castrol DOT 4 brake fluid.

Castrol has been my preferred brand and as AFAIK, they have never sold DOT 3 so I have always used and recommended their fluid for all of my Volvo customers because I could tell them if they bought Castrol brake fluid, they were guaranteed not to get DOT 3.

About 10 years ago, some marketing genius decided to change the name from LMA to GT and touted the fact that the fluid was now synthetic and without consulting them, we changed to a different brand.

About 3 years later, I decided to call Castrol's tech line about Zinc/Phosphorous levels in their engine oils and asked about the change in their brake fluid whilst I had them on the phone.

Their rep let me know that it was a marketing gimmick and that the glycol they have been using has been synthetically produced long before they changed the label.

I quickly switched back to Castrol.

DON'T THEY HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO AND I DON'T JUST MEAN CASTROL!! IF IT AIN'T BROKE WHY FIX IT!!

I don’t think it’s a problem Jim. Just don’t mix the silicone based DOT 5 with the glycol based 3/4.
