Farewell to Irv Gordon 1800

Farewell to the wonderful man that drove his 1966 P1800 over 3 Million miles. We lost him yesterday. He was returning from a trip to China.

Farewell to Irv Gordon - RIP 1800

I agree Art -- 60,000 miles a year for FIFTY YEARS.....

I met Irv in Knoxville TN where I lived and he was passing through on one of his patented sea-to-shining-sea drives between Long Island and Los Angeles. He was at the local Volvo dealer - Clayton Volvo. I had just read an article in Motorweek about him. Had no idea it was him -- was just admiring his 1800 in the parking lot when he walked up. I introduced myself and complimented him on the car. His reply 'yeah, driven by a little old school teacher since 1966'. I said - 'Next you're gonna tell me you're that guy from Long Island with over (then) 2 million miles on the car.' He broke into a big grin, put out that big, meaty hand and said 'Hi - name's Irv Gordon.'

No shit.

Amazing how heartwarming your story is, Michael. I bet you were walking on air the rest of that day, if Irv's smile was as big as the photos show.

R.I.P. Irv Gordon. That car still looks amazing. "Man and Machine" That`s an accomplishment. I`m sure he will be missed. I think we all know how Irv felt about his Volvo. Love my 544. Larry

Farewell to Irv Gordon - RIP 1800

I spoke to Irv at a local weekly "car show" in a shopping center parking lot a couple of months ago. He was having the car shipped to the west coast the next week. Years ago while working in an Indy Volvo shop I did some basic service on the car. It probably had something between 1 and 2 million on it then. He was as unassuming a man as you'll ever meet His everyday commute was made on some of the most congested roads on Long Island - he had to have a true love for his car to accomplish what he did. -- Dave

I agree Oldduke. That Volvo should be in the Smithsonian as a tribute to a man, a machine, and the human spirit. A remarkable achievement.
