'93 940 Crank (RPM) Sensor Failure 900

Dear Fellow Brickboarders,

Hope you're well. Sudden engine cut-outs, with immediate re-start can have several causes. But tachometer "twitches" during cranking indicted the crank sensor, installed in 2004. Jostling the sensor's wire did not disrupt engine operation.

The removed sensor's wire insulation was fine. A resistance test showed 167.6 Ohms between contacts 1 and 2 and no continuity elsewhere.

Heavy corrosion at the sensor's tip seems to have destroyed this sensor. Have you seen this sort of thing?

Thanks for your comments.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

'93 940 Crank (RPM) Sensor Failure 900

Hi Spook,

No I haven't had such failure in the past. Anyway the ohms reading seems to be in specs according to the blue Pocketbook. What does the OBD say? Corrosion from water dripping down the wiper scutter? Any photo?

Regards,
Amarin.

'93 940 Crank (RPM) Sensor Failure 900

Dear Amarin,

Hope you're well. I think the corrosion came from below, as the threads on the 10mm hex head bolt were bright and clean. There was only a narrow circle of rust around the outer edge of the bolt head's underside. The bolt was snug, i.e., no easy way for water to get under the sensor's flange. After nearly 15 years, the sensor doesn't owe me a penny.

I didn't consult the OBD: the tach's twitches ("fibrillations") seemed conclusive.

I have a photo but do not know how to upload it. The sensor's tip is fully encrusted by rust/corrosion.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
